The XP firewall is pretty good

I tried Shields up to see how secure my comp was and here are the results :

Attempting connection to your computer. . .

Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet

    Pretty cool

I have my Windows XP Pro. firewall turned off. You can't host games with this on. Also, you can't send file in Windows Messenger.

Where/How do you test how secure your puter is? I just got McAfee 6 and it came with a firewall and I would like to test it! I know it works tho cause it stoped a "Newtear" attack aparently!

The XP firewall is pretty good against incoming traffic but does nothing against outgoing communication. That is probably why the trojan got passed it kuanteen. Zone alarm and sygate both offer free firewalls that block incoming and outgoing traffic. And im pretty sure they stealth most of the more popularly used ports like 135, 139, and 445. And of course you can always manually disable file and printer sharing if you dont need it, to disable netbios shares.

    And I agree.
I like the sygate test http://scan.sygatetech.com/, it takes a while but seems to do a thorough job.

I run Zonealarm on each system and have the hardware firewall in my router too, Microsofts firewall is the sort of thing included for those that don't know what a firewall is. It provides at least some protection for those that otherwise would have none.
