Umm why is FSAA off in there?
-
Man With Nothing To Lose
It's off because I don't want to use FSAA on a Mobility Radeon. The thing only has a fillrate of 166megapixels/sec and 500megatexels/sec and about 1.3GB/sec of memory bandwidth so using FSAA is not a wise choice.
*edit* If you couldn't tell in the screenshot FSAA is off. This filtering glitch is really annoying me! Everything looks so blurry in the distance.

Search for a key (in the registry) called "AnisoDegree" and set it to 16, see if that helps.
Start -> Run - > Regedit
That will get you into the registry. ONLY do what I said above, don't change any other values.

I've got mixed results from going to AnisoDegree of 16. CHeck out the screenshots to see why.
Looks good!

Hmm..

It seems like if I look at the ground from a higher elevation then the textures are sharp. However if I look at the ground on even level textures become a lot less detailed. It becomes even more blurry if I crouch. This is strange, this junk didn't happen before installing the Catalyst drivers.
Image quality is better with AnisoDegree set at 16 but I can still see some blurriness. It's totally not normal since my GeForce3 is much sharper than my Radeon even without anisotropic filtering turned on. Hmm.

the catalyst drivers also messed up my anisotrophic filtering also...I installed the latest leaked betas (6018) and it was fine after that...

The weird thing is that have uninstalled the catalyst drivers and installed the 6058 drivers and my anisotropic filtering is still messed up.
Will the 6018 drivers fix my problem? From the driver # it sounds a little old are you sure those are the latest leaked betas?

Seems like the problem still exists, but I do get 130 more 3DMarks. Yay. I get around 1840 now which is pretty good since I used to get 1200 something with the standard Sony Radeon XP driver.
I guess I'll just live with the blurriness. It's not like I game on my laptop that much anyway.

erm may I offer a reason?
You have 32 bit to 16 bit textures could this be the reason?
I know it reduces quality.

Heehee, good call. I skimmed right over that.

Half-Life is a game designed for 16-bit color and the only way to use 32-bit color on the game is to force it on through the command line.
I believe it should be optimized rather well for 16-bit since I doubt the developers had in mind that people would go though command line editing to get 32-bit color, but I dunno, I'll try that later (on my desktop right now).
*edit* After some thought on this I don't think 32-bit color will solve my problems since I played with the same settings before the Catalyst drivers and image quality was superb so it should not be affecting the quality now either, but I'll give it a shot.
