Post Maxtor D740X 40Gig drive problem.

I'm using windowsxp, and I just purchased the 40gig OEM drive but it doesn't appear on "My Computer"
The property says the drive is working properly, but I couldn't see the damn drive in "My Computer"
It is there, but it is NOT there.
When I searched in my properties I was able to find these 'unusual' lines

    Maxtor 6L040J2
    Disk1
    Type: Unknown
    Status: Not initialized
    Partition type: Not applicable

    Anyone can help me?

I have these as my configuration right now.
13.6 gig Maxtor drive 1st master
    40gig Maxtor 1st slave
    LG 16-10-32 drive 2nd master
    Toshiba 4X drive 2nd slave

Going higher than 2400mhz is near impossible with air cooling.

are ya sure you've got the jumpers set correctly on both drives. like not single master unit, not cable select. ya know, wouldn't hurt to check it again...

    No, jumper is ok

    Ive tried

    1. Cable select on both
    2. CS on 13.6 gig, slave select on 40 gig
    3. Master select on 13.6 gig, CS on 40 gig
Nope, I need to fix the
    "not initiated problem" and others.

Actually I just read this in another forum.
Install the disk into your computer

    1. Boot into WinXP

    2. Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'

    3. When the manager open, choose 'Disk Management' from the left-panel

    4. Your new drive will be shown as a large empty block...

    5. Right-click this empty block and choose 'create partition'

    6. Specify that this should be a 'Primary partition' and set a size (you can use the entire drive if you wish)

    7. You can specify up to three primary partitions on each drive under WinXP if you wish

    8. On the next screen, assign a drive letter and choose to format the drive with the NTFS system

CAMS has the right answer (or the answer I would have given, but don't get confused those 2 aren't always the same). Way to be CAMS! You can also do this much easier in DOS, but I'm assuming since you didn't know it had to be done, you're prolly not old school :-)

let us know if that doesn't work

    btw
    Is NTSF better than FAT32?
    (give more space, faster...etc.?)

    Cool

Yes, NTFS is better. It allows for better security than fat32. Go with NTFS.

u goto DOS and type "fdisk"

NTFS is slower than FAT32 but has better security and file sharing features.

I was under the impressions that the Maxtor DiamondMax+ drives came preformatted?

I never saw a drive that came pre-formatted and I've seen a lot of them!

I booted from WinXP and partitioned from there. I didn't realise you could partition and format the second disk from within XP.

Affraid not - there would be little point, what with so many power/entheusiast users (which is who this drive is aimed at imho) partition their drives or use it in a RAID array having it preformatted would be a waste - theres also the issue of would they format it Fat32 or NTFS, and do either of those and all the Linux crown would complain - its as much politics as technicallity I guess!

As has been said, I also have never heard of a hard disk coming pre formatted... floppy disks maybe!
