Wondering about networking...
I have 3 computers networked togethor through a Dlink DI-604 gateway router which my DSL also hooks up to. I can use whatever printer I want (have 2 hooked up) and share files that are in the shared folders. Problem is when I try to play LAN games. Latest example would be Warcraft 3. I hosted a LAN game with my computer, and the game never showed up on my other computers. Is there something else you have to do to allow gaming against eachother? Thanks...

So, do you mean with the other computers on your network, or other players over the Internet?

My guess is, unless otherwise supported by the game, that you used the same CD to install WC3 on all of your computers on your network. To prevent piracy of software many games will not run on a network when the same CD key is used, because like an IP address for the network, it requires each game to have a separate CD key to prove that copies were purchased for each system running the game.

If you have a software firewall check to see that it allows your games to access the network, also check if your router is blocking the ports the game needs to communicate.

A software firewall on the computer could cause this, the firewall in router will not. The router firewall prevents the sending of unathorized trafic coming in to the router from outside. It has absolutely no effect on devices already on the same LAN segment; this also means that ports are not affected for LAN play behind the router firewall.

i dont think it has anything to do with piracy protection, because it only checks when u connect to the blizzard servers, but make sure you have the IPX/SPX/net bios protocols installed on all the comps, some games only work through this protocol.

I just get so pissed when i hear about new and improved "piracy prevention" methods, if i had the problem described above i wouldn´t go out and buy a new copy (if you know what i mean). When are manufacturers going to understand that all their fancy protection doesn´t stop the priates, it´s only the honest pepole that suffers.

This type of thing has been around for a long time. Quake III does the same thing. If you have multiple systems with the same CD key on the network, only the first system to find and connect to the server will get in. The other system just won't see the server, or will get some kind of error about already being connected.

If you have something like a cisco you can configure it to effect the LAN segment

The cracked Q3 I've **seen** allows you to put any key you want in. Just use a different one on each pc
