    Help! Do I have a bootable CD-rom?

    Hello-

I am a 1st time builder with new parts on the way, and I am considering how to install Win XP pro on my new rig. I have read about boot disks, but I wasn't even planning on putting in a floppy drive. My question, is will I be able to install XP by simply putting the XP cd into the drive and powering up?? I have a new Epox 8hka2, Amd 2000, and the lite-on 48x cdrw for the rig. I would sure love a little advice, as I am pretty clueless at the moment. Thanks!

Yes you can boot from cd with that motherboard. Just go into the BIOS, and configure it to boot from CD-ROM first. After XP reboots during setup, go back into the BIOS and configure it to boot from HDD as the first boot device.

Thanks for the quick response- BTW, the motherboard I was referring to is the 8k5a2 (oops) At any rate, I just want to be clear- when I am talking about booting from the CD, the CD with the OS on it will allow me to boot, correct? Thanks again!

That board runs on a KT266A BIOS right? KT266A supports boot from CD.

You have to change the boot sequence. The BIOS will look for different boot devices. Usually it looks for a boot device in the floppy drive, then the IDE-0 (hard drive) then other places. You can change these values. Set Boot Up Floppy seek = disabled. First Boot Device = CD. Second Boot device = IDE-O (or HDD-0 or whatever it's called). Third boot device doesn't matter. Boot other devices = No. Search for boot record from floppy = no.

So if the CD-Rom is the first boot device the BIOS will search the CD-ROM for a boot sector. If you have a bootable CD then it will find the boot sector on the CD ROM and boot from it. That will launch the Windows XP setup.
