Neverwinter Nights general question. thanx
i want to buy it, but if it is anything like morrowind (where you end up "reading" what people say rather than hearing it, I want nothing to do with it. "Reading" long paragraphs of conversations is for console games.
My question: do the people you interact with actually talk? You know .wav, mp3 files? Thanks

Only a few actually talk. So yes, you must "read" it all.
You kids these days sure are lazy.

Maybe you ought to change your name to "High-Standards"
I can't recall a single RPG on any platform that will actually "speak" all the dialog for the whole game. If you think about it, that's asking quite a lot.
I also take it you don't read too many books either?

I would die if RPG's went to voice only. I'm too busy taking notes and stuff off of the written dialog for quests. If they spoke, you would miss out on something important. Could you imagine playing Baldurs Gate I with voice only for the dialog?!? AARRGGH!

Gothic used all voice for everything. No game has ever had more beleivable characters either. The NPC's in that game were incredible! Too bad that most people were turned off by the strange controls. It was a clasic IMO.

I see we all have forgotten about Diablo. Well I can' stand reading that NWN crap either. I actually don't know which I dislike more, the reading or listening to the bad dialogue.

For one thing this is an RPG, not a hack and slash. Naturally there will be challenge involved(Especially for people who can't read very good ) And you don't have to listen to everybody you decide to talk to. Just take your time and try and find something in the dialogue that tells you something usefull.

Reading on a monitor, especially a CRT monitor, is definitely not as enjoyable as reading on paper. Also the writing in most games is poor compared to the popular fantasy authors. I still find it disturbing that so many people hate to read. It is as if using your brain hurts or something. You can generally read faster than it would take for the speech to play out.
I really liked how the speech in NWN would just voice the first line and make you read the rest. The one line of speech would set the tone for the conversation. I almost wish that they would have done the same with Aribeth rather than have her use all speech. After a while I would just ignore her speech and just read it to save time.
And in Diablo 2, if I hear Cain say "Stay a while and listen" one more time I think I'm going to go insane.

Mr Zurkon is here to kill
it was also disappointing too when I saw that they didn't speak to you in morrowind...it just kind of killed the atmosphere...I wish games had the people speak to you and also included text to go along with it in case you missed something...

Word, Reading is much better than hearing but increasing font size if needed at that 1600 x 1200 resolution is nice.

And yes I would buy it but since you probably already registered it, that means I can't play Multiplayer.

got me all wrong!
it isn't that I don't like to read, hell I'm a huge Stephen King and Dean Koonts fan. I read novels as another hobby so why the hell would I want to do it in a game all the time? I have a PC! I have SPEAKERS! Talk to me!!! I don't mind reading subtitles, many hard drives these days have massive storage, use it up!!! Put all of those mp3 or .wav files on my hard disk so I can play and HEAR a game...not read it! The closest game I have played to an RPG prior to this game is Deus Ex. Maaaaan, all kinds of dialoge in that game. It took 4 years for NWN to come out, why not spend another 6 months making folks talk?
By the way, I bought the game literally hours after I started this post and love the hell out it! I would still like to hear more folks talk however.

If you don't like to read, you should play Baldurs Gate 2: Dark Alliance for the PS2, or Xbox. It's one of my favorite games for the system (PS2 version), and the voice acting is excellent.

In Diablo you are fighting hells army. For that I think non-stop killing is a must. Ever play doom? Yeah well its been a long time since then. Imagine that. Diablo 2 is also a good game.
