    AMD vs. Intel

I heard that Intel gave money to its Rival AMD so Intel wouldn't be considered a monopoly like what happened to Microsoft. I just want to verify that this is true or not

Now now, thats a bit harsh. He could of seen it at some site and just be asking to see if it was true. Just answer his question instead of insulting him.

What you may have heard about is that Intel licensed the x86 instruction set (which runs identically inside Intel and AMD chips up to the 486) in order to satisfy U.S. government/military requirements for second sourcing. The Army cannot allow itself to be without spare parts, so it can only buy certain items if there is a second supplier available. After the 586 (Pentium or K5) series processors, AMD actually changed its microprocessor cores to be significantly different in architecture from the Intel chips.

Actually, AMD is quite financially secure. It is a common misnomer in the computer business that AMD must be "poor", since Intel is so rich. In reality, AMD is a multi-billion dollar company which is the envy of most other high tech firms. Its market capitalization as of right now, even with a highly depressed stock market is $3.32 billion. Here's the proof:

    Microsoft Money AMD quote

Although Intel is much larger, AMD has over $1 billion in cash, and is currently weathering the tech slowdown just fine. They will likely begin returning to excellent profitability by the beginning of next year with the Sledgehammer and Clawhammer chips all being heavily supported by NVidia, ATI, Hewlett Packard/Compaq, among many, many others.
    AMD Phenom II X2 550BE@X4 (4cores unlocked) 3.82GHz (1.456V); Zalman CNPS 10X Quiet; 4Gb Kingston DDR2-800; 2x4850 512MB Crossfired

Uh, guys? This isn't a flame war. Did you even bother to read the thread before posting? AoTiKo was asking about a financial rumor, to have it either confirmed or dispelled. I don't see how that could be construed as flame-inducing material, nor could any of the posts in this thread be considered flames.

*edit* Well, with the exception of lessthanjake_666's post...
