    Windows XP "My Documents"

I set my girlfriends "my documents" to private so that my little siblings couldn't get into them. (She has an account on my computer) I reformatted the computer without un-checking the private setting for her documents, and now whenever I try to open that file, it says that I do not have access. How do I unlock her documents so she can get them back?

I'm not sure what XP means by "private". If it encrypted the files, you're pretty much SoL. If it just changed the permissions on them like I'm pretty sure it dide, just right-click the directory(assuming you've got simple file sharing disabled and that you've got admin rights) and go to properties. Under the Security tab, click "Add" and select your user name and give yourself full access. If it doesn't let you do that, go to Advanced, Owner tab, then select your user and make yourself the owner and you'll be able to set any permissions you want on the folder.

(As said above) if you encrypted the folder you are screwed. You need the private key to unlock the folder, and that disappeared when you formatted. You didn't back up the key by any chance did you?

You guys are awesome. I disabled simple file sharing, then set my gf to be the owner of that folder and it worked like a dream. Thank you guys very much for your help.
