DVD drive not reading certain DVD's

I have this strange problem that is very frustrating and nobody seems to now exactly what is wrong. Certain DVD's that I own such as Shrek, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and The Deer Hunter will not work on my DVD drive. When I put them in they just don't appear at all. If I go to My Computer it shows no disc in the drive and if I try to click on the DVD drive it asks me to insert a disc. All of my other DVD's work fine. The strange thing is that the DVD's that don't work will play perfectly fine on a regular DVD player.

About the only thing that even remotely sounds like a possibility is that the DVD drive I have for some reason won't read certain types of multi-layer discs. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe my drive is dirty, but then I don't understand why all of my other DVD's would work fine. It's very frustrating because I just went out and bought The Deer Hunter tonight only to come back and find that I can't watch it because of my stupid DVD player. I have the Pioneer 16x tray load DVD player. It's suppposed to be a good one apparently. I'm also running XP pro (the rest is in my sig.) Anybody have any idea on this one? Thanks

I'd suggest trying to spray some compressed air inside the dvdrom. If that doesnt work try using another dvd software player to play the dvd.

I have two things.

Go to the Pioneer website and double check your drives format compatability as you intially stated there is a fairly good chance that it could be format that the DVD-ROM drive doesnt recognize.


Second and lamest of all is maybe you are being tagged by some older security measure designed to copy protect DVDs. Its a pretty lame guess but one never knows.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try what you suggested and see if it works. How would I get around the security thing if that was the problem? I mean it is a legal DVD, so I don't think that it should be illegal for me to get around a security measure to watch it on my computer right :rolleyes: ?

As to what skywise said I don't think that using a different software player will work because the drive doesn't even recognize that anything is even in there, so I don't see how the software player would do anything if it thinks there's nothing there. I'll try it anyway, but I don't think that will work. I'll try blowing out the drive like you said though. It's just strange that it's only certain DVD's that don't work while others do. Anyway, it may be time for me to get a new DVD-ROM. Thanks

I dont see any obvious reasons why, but you could always write to Pioneer and ask if they know of any compatability problems with those DVDs.

Edit: Ohh yeah and using a different Player. Hell might as well, Computers are tre strange one never knows what will solve the problem.

Ok, I tried using a different player and it just says there's no disc in the drive. I'll try contacting Pioneer about it, but I think I may end up having to get a different drive. If I do get a different one, which one would you suggest? Is the Pioneer 106S good? thanks again
