What OS are you tring to use?

    For Win98SE
1st - did you fdisk your HDD?
2nd - reboot - type format C: /s at the a:/ (you will need a boot disk in the FDD for both steps).

3rd - place your CD in the cd-rom drive (reboot with cd-rom the 1st boot order)
    4th - windows will setup

    FOR XP
    New HDD or Formatted HDD

XP was simple. CD rom as boot device, follow on screen instructions. Done.

    Thanks for finishing my post.

I lost my page and thought I completed my thought.. I guess I didn't.

    THanks for adding your comments.

MOST OS can install by booting from the CD. If you are worried about adding CABS - you can copy them later (for win9x) THe current OS's have the CABS already installed for you.

Try cleaning your Windows CD and vacume out your CDrom drive and see if that helps. The order of your boot devices dapends on what OS you are using, if it is 98SE and above you can boot from your Windows CD and should have your CDrom first in your boot order.

    Personally,
I will set my CD to first boot for install of OS only, and then for speed and convenience I will make the HDD or FDD the first boot.

Although, it really doesn't matter much - if there isn't a bootable CD in the drive, BIOS will look for the next bootable device.

From your previous post I assume that you are attempting to load Win98SE on your old system. I prefer to load the OS from the C: drive so that when I need a file from the CD I don't need to go find the disk. The OS will always look to the drive from where it was installed for the files. If you want to try this method, proceed as follows:

    1. Put the Win98SE startup disk in the a: drive and boot. ( the floppy drive should be set as the first boot device in the bios).

    2. Select start with CD support from the menu.

    3. At the A: Type the following FORMAT C: and hit the enter key

    4. After the format is complete and assuming the report reveals no bad sectors type MD WIN98 and hit enter

    5. Type E: and hit enter to change to the CD. Put the windows CD in the tray.

    6. Type CD WIN98 and hit enter to change to the Win98 directory on the CD

    7. Type COPY *.* c:\WIN98 and hit enter to copy the Win98 files to the HD

    8. Type CD\ and hit enter to change to the c: drive

    9. Type CD WIN98 to change to the Win98 directory

    10. Type SETUP to load the operating system.

i have tried all d possible ways. when i format my HD disk, after about 3 or 4 % it says that "TRYING TO RECEOVER ALLOCATION UNITs 744,550 somefing like, would dat mean dat the HD is dead or faulty and if so what can be done. Next thing, it could b that i may have some sort of virus on d disk or somefing. since i aint got no OS installed, how would i go on about deleting the infected virus.

Sounds like you've got some bad clusters on that drive of yours. You'll need to run a surface scan using scandisk so that the bad clusters can be marked as bad so that windows does not try to use them. If scandisk is not on the drive you will need to put scandisk.exe on a boot floppy and run it from there. Or just RMA the drive if it is still under warranty.

if the hard drive is no longer under warranty, you can figure where about the bad clusters are and put them in a partition, without formatting them for example -
40 gig hard drive and it gets bad clusters at 4% so the first 1.6 gig would be good so create the c partition to be 1.5 gig.
then create another partition d and make it 1 gig.
allocate all other space to partition e.
    format c and e.
install os and hopefully all the bad sectors will be stuck in the unused partition.
this is a pain but may work until you order a new hard drive.
anandtech sucks, this is my opinion,my signiture has been changed because I was asked to,please don't visit anandtech!!

    It's a great answer though

I'm going to remember it. Cut 'n' paste that one methinks.

i think i agree wid u. i personally think that it does hav some bad clusters. but there'z one problem some times it tries to recover allocation units at 4% and sometimes at 70%. i mean there aint no fixed %, at whihc it recovers the allocation units. it happens randomly but only once or twice.
