I need the quietest setup possible!!
My computer is about as loud as a vacuum cleaner due to all the fans it has and it's really annoying. I wanna make it silent by getting a new case, fans, etc.. basically a whole new cooling system.
My question is: what would you choose as the quietest setup possible that can still cool everything properly? keep in mind that I have a Athlon T-Bird 1.4ghz (really hot) and I wanna keep it at 40 to 50 degrees celsius or less. I also have 4 hard drives which put out quite a bit of heat and a GeForce 3. so I would prefer if the case has some cooling in the front. I also want to keep this case around for a long time, so it has to have lots of room to expand and more possible cooling options for a later and hotter CPU.
would you go with water cooling? or is a water cooler really loud too? what heatsink + fan would you use for the athlon? gimme a whole setup that you think will do the job.
price is not that important for me.. but the cheaper the better.
thanks.

Water cooling is super silent and super cool. You just need a minimal amount of airflow through the case, so you can use panaflos which are really silent. The watercooling itself is silent, you just have to have some fans to cool off the radiator. Its a great solution but not for the newbie (I haven't got the guts to try it yet )

water cooling is expensive and not worth it in my opinion. for a quiet setup i would go with the thermaltake xaser case, it is a chieftec case modded with 5 stealth fans that are rated at 21 db each, which is as quiet as your gonna get for a case fan, and go with a thermaltake volcano 7+ HSF, its got 3 speed settings, the lowest is rated at 24db, and from what i have heard it cools great even on the lowest setting. you can find the case for 120 shipped and the HSF for between 25-30 online. i am planning on building a new system after the new year, and this will most likely be the setup i go with, sound is a big issue for me.

i would get SLK-800 + 53CFM mechatronics or ultra panaflo, or possibly an adjustable fan like enermax or ys tech adjustable so you could quiet it down even more when you wanted to. then i would replace all the case fans with panaflo L or M, or whatever speed you needed to maintain good temps (i'd probably get a chieftec or antec, btw -- good airflow, and they have HD fan slot, too.) i might also consider replacing the PSU fans if they were too loud. gl!
