I had this problem awhile back and it turned out to be the ram, but you should check and see what it does when it encounters and error. Somewhere (i am not sure right off the top of my head) in the properties of My Computer, there is an option for what to do when it gets errors. I remember one of those was to restart the computer, and another was to do a memory dump. Look and see what that one is set at.
Some day, that fateful finger from above will point down, and it will be pointing at me.

he cant get in to windows coz when he starts the computer, it either shuts down or restarts without actually going in to windows. now he has the original windows 2000 cds. is there any way to use that CD and recover the system.

Can he boot to safe mode? You can try and recover with the CDs, I have never really done that, so I don't know if it is guarenteed to work or not, but it is worth a shot.
