Needing a new CPU fan for AMD 900 Athlon socket, any suggestions?

Will the volcano 7 be to big? Or is there another style/brand that will work.

All I am finding are fans for AMD XP, no Athlons. Or will and XP work with the Athlon?

I have an ATX MOBO. Stats of the mobo are here:

    http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=42

My current fan seems to have dipped to 500 RPMs, and I am looking at ordering one online before I leave work.

Any quick suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Allright, what about a ThermalTake Volcano 6 and a shim? I can get all of that for $15 and I already have some arctic silver.

That should cool off my cpu, or should I go with a higher end model?

I hate to keep posting in my own thread, but I like to keep it up to date with my thought process on fixing things.

Okay, I've searched about shims here, and I'm not going to bother with one. I don't have one on my CPU now, and thought that might have something to do with heat.

I have also moved like 3 times in the past few months and have probably messed my fan up moving.

Anyway, I am either going to order the Volcan 6+ or the Volcano 7.

    Wish me luck

I found one at Fry's last night for 14.99, so I had to pay tax, but walked out the store with it

I'm off to grab a sound card today.

I haven't installed the fan b/c I'm going out of town for a few days, and will put that and the sound card in at one time. I'm also going to rearrange my rear fan setup, hopefully everything will start to cool down.

You'd be dandy with the V6, just it'll be a bit loud (since it is a 60mm heatsink, and they are inheriently LOUD). You could have been better off with at least a Volcano 9 or an AX7. They both cool better and aren't as loud (plus, the Volcano 9 has a multi-adjustiable fan).

But once you get that 6 on and you like the temps and noise (45C or less at load is decent), no sense in dishing out more cash.

Thanks Ashpool. I've read about the fan being noisy, but you haven't heard my 50xcdrom drive! That thing sounds like an airplane. I just use my burner all the time b/c of that noise machine. Anyway, I'd rather have a cooler system, and just deal with the noise, I read where there was like 3 degrees to 5 degrees difference in the two different volcano 6 models. I thought the 7 and 9 volcano's might be a little too heavy for my MOBO, and I'm only running an AMD 900 w/ no OC. SO, I figured the 6 should work cool.

I've been in touch with mystifmagic about this and he's shooting me some recommendations for a front fan, I have a 5 1/4 bay free, and also am upgrading my hd fan. Give me another day, and I'll have those temps down! I'll let you know what they are when I get everything bought, and installed.

One more, is there a different system temp progaram to use besides the one that came with my system? I am using VIA hardware monitor.

    Thanks, again!

Motherboard Monitor 5 is one of the best. Also monitors fan RPM's and PSU Rails (which VIA's app does too).

Hey, I'm selling a good little cooler for that Socket Athlon. Its the Thermalright SK-6 and it comes with a great little YS-Tech fan. Its not the Delta screamer that is found on that Volcano, but paired with the all copper SK-6 it does a h3lluva job cooling.

I've got it in the classifieds here:

Thanks mellojoe, but it is too big for my P.O.S. micro ATX case. The damn power supply sits right on top of the CPU.

I'm probably going to have to order a new tower case. I don't think this case was rigged up to take everything that I have in it. It is a poor design, but it was free with 300 w supply

Yeah, it sucks. It's taken me a year and half to figure that out though I've attached an IMG url of a different case, but the inside is the same. As you can see the power supply sits right over where my CPU would be on my motherboard. There might be 2mm of space between my volcano fan and the case of the powersupply.

This is why I'm hunting down a new case online. Prices at the stores here in town are outrageous compared to what you can find online.

    Anyway check it out:

I got the Volcano 6cu+ 7000 RPM installed this evening

It's showing 9000 RPMs on the monitor though, probably wrong, but better than showing 500 RPMS with the volcano 5 that had been on there.

Temps haven't changed much. Hopefully the new case will free some space for the fan. There is only 2-4 mm of space between the top of it and the powersupply housing in my mini mid tower case (POS case)

Thanks for everyone who replied in my thread, it was very helpful!

Another update on the path to cooling my system down

I just ordered this case: Click on images to find out more about them.

Came with a 320 watt power supply. I already have a 300 watt, but now I have two. I've been wanting an extra one for testing components and stuff before putting them in the case. No biggie.

I also ordered two fans like these:

That taps me out with a $5 coupon for $70 total. I work a few blocks from their store, so I'm just going to go over there tomorrow on my lunch break, saves shipping and the $5 coupon covered the tax

With the two LED fans, I'm going to put those on the side, and move the two generic 80mm fans to the front. I'll then take my 80mm fan out of my other system and it has a 80 to 60 converter to put on the back of the case.

Throw in my 3 fan Antec HDD cooler blowing in on the 5 1/4 bay, power supply above the motherboard and out of the way, and I started modding my video card last night (got tired, will finish it today) and hopefully I'll have some better temps!

Just wanted to say thanks to Sharkys and the members for helping me out. I have learned a lot from here, and got some kick butt information that's new to me and old to others (like how to round those frigging HD cables!)

So, I have started down the path of a couple more dollars here, a couple more dollars there, that looks cool I want one, etc. etc.

My next project is a trip to Radio Shack and build my own fanbus w/ LED's. fool proof directions here.

What your Heatsink should NOT look like

I've put up a few pics of my old heatsink on this page here:

It's a quick look at what I'm working on. Sorry for the page sucking, but hey it's all I could manage while at work
