Asus P4T533
My roommate's computer was just fried, so he has a free ticket for a bigger and badder computer. We are looking at getting him an Asus P4T533 with onboard RAID. Is this RAID worth the extra $4 the mobo would cost? or should he get another raid card for better performance. Speed is the key here, money isn't (he isn't spending his). Thanks for your guy's help.

so are you looking to run RAID 0 then? meaning having files split on two hard drives to speed up preformance or RAID 1 to have each complete file written to each hard drive for back up?
either way personally i would just go with the onboard RAID though you might get slightly better performace from a particular controller card depending on what RAID you want and it also might matter what stripe size is choosen too.

Raid 0 is what he would be running. He does currently have a raid card in his system, but I don't know what it was, or if it is any good after the electrocution his computer recieved.

If money is not a concern, and you have had power problems I would suggest getting a belkin universal UPS. You can choose between 800,1000, 1200.

These will provide surge suppression along with voltage regulation AND backup power for a long time. THe 1000 will give you 75 minutes of backup power at a typical load. If you have high wattage speakers like the klipsch models i wouldnt recommend plugging those into it though because they will drain the batteries too fast.
If you dont want the UPS at least get a good surge suppressor.

Thanks, the UPS is a good idea. He did have a good surge suppressor, a $35 Fellows. My cheap $10 suppressor and crappy PSU survived this, but his expensive PSU and suppressor are no more. Irony. I will look into the UPS though, thanks.
