Please help with WIN2K Reg Problem!!! REWARD!!!!!!

I have this guy I built a PC for a few years back, I moved outta state and now I get a call from him with some odd error!! I need to help him VIA E-mail to get this worked out, so I was hoping I could count on you SMART GUYS out here!!! SO If you can fix me up (or him up I should say)

Here is the problem, his kid installed something last week called SPY PAL???? And it worked days after so im not sure if it brought a virus in or what, but now when he boots up he gets right before windows login and this flashes up very fast on the screen!! (so fast he had to record it with a camcorder and replay it on his tv!!! lol that was odd)

Anyways here is what it says!

Reg Cannot Load Hive File <:\Systemroot\system32\config\software
Cannot load Log or Alternate


Ok thats it....

HOW IN GODS NAME DO I FIX THIS!!!!

If the Recovery Console is installed, start it and jump to step 3.

If the Recovery Console is NOT installed:

1. Start the setup media and press R at Welcome to Setup.

2. Press C to start the Recovery Console.

3. Select the install instance you wish to repair.

4. Enter the administrator password. If this is a domain controller, you must enter the Directory Services Restore Mode Adminstrator password.

5. Type the following commands:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
6. Copy the more recent of %SystemRoot%\repair\regback\system or %SystemRoot%\repair\system to the current folder (%SystemRoot%\System32\Config).
7. Type exit to restart.

NOTE: Any services, device drivers, or program registry entries that where installed after the date of this System hive must be reinstalled.

Try that and let me know if that resolved the problem.

How do I access the recovery console without booting into the OS, Im not fimilar with WIN2K.

And pressing R at the welcome screen.

Your reffering to the startup banner or a boot from the win2k CD,I was confused on (setup media) what do you mean by that.


Sorry if I seem so stupid, I have had my head buried in WINXP for months now.

Sorry for the vague explination. Boot from the Install CD and choose the recovery. It will give you a few options.

I hope that helps. You can also boot from a floppy as long as you didnt install NTFS and change those files from that.
