    CPU/motherboard combos good?

Hmm...I'm kind of on a small budget right now. Yesterday, I saw a 2.4 Ghz, P4 with a soyo motherboard for $289.99. Basically, it's the 2.4 Ghz package that is attached to the motherboard box and covered with plastic. Do you guys think this is a good deal? This is from Fys Electronics by the way. Oh yeah, they'll throw in a case with a 420 Watt power supply and floppy drive for $89 more dollars, if I get it before Sunday.

That to me doesn't sound bad at all.

I'm not a huge fan of Soyo boards, but i know they have a following, so they must be alright. I'm more Abit/Asus, and i'm probably gonna hit up an Epox board soon.

But as just a 'deal' that sounds sweet. Overclock or not, thats a good start to nice system.

And is the 2.4 a northwood?

I might overclock it, but this is for a client, and he probably doesn't want me to fiddle with it.

I think so, because the FSB is 533 Mhz. Maybe I should grab one before the sale ends Hey, it has a built in ethernet card!

If you are not really going to overclock, then it's a good deal.

soyo boards are great for non overclocking situations, and even in mild oc ones as well. Fry's always has those soyo combos, with athlon XP's and P4's. lots of features, a beautiful looking boards. build in ethernet usually, 6 channel sound which i know isn't the best but good for normal users. they can't tell, and frankly i can barely tell. i haven't looked at this particular board but doesn't it have firewire and other features?

i say go for it. some have had problems with Soyo boards, but with Fry's, just torture it the first few days, you have 15 days to return the combo for any reason whatsoever. probably 30 days to replace the board.

Alright, bought it and tested it. It looks pretty good, and yeah my client doesn't want it overclocked, so I'm fine. It has built in ethernet, 2 2.0 USB ports and intergrated sound. I guess I can go easy on the sound card now, that'll save him an extra $50. Now, all I have to do is finish it by wed, and I can get my $800...
