Ok, last thread about the 52x lite-on

Sorry, still having too much fun with it. I did the registry trick to make nero show the actual burn speed instead of the intended speed. Here's burning a 703meg file

    Promise, last post.....

Don't feel too bad, I was using my USB 4x external burner up until this past Sept. when I splurged on my 40x Liteon. I was just absolutely dumbfounded at an approx. 3 min burn when I was used to a 20 min burn. If ya put your mind to it, even a 24x would amaze you. And not to mention only put you out about 30 to 40 bucks tops

Any cd-r I've tried burns at 52x without errors. Hell, I've used some 3 year old no label compusa cd-r's (which I think are rated at 8x max) and burned them at 52x without a problem.

I've had 100% success burning at twice the rated speed of the media. I have a 48x liteon, very good drives btw. unfortunately I have about 75 16x cdrs sitting here they will burn at 40x but I've had some trouble w/ them at 48x.

It's because the Lite-On's test each blank CD-R/CDRW blank disc that you put in, and then determine the fastest safe burn speed that it can burn it at. So if you've got some old media rated at like 12x, it'll test it automatically, and when you're ready to make a cd with that blank one, it'll show you the max speed it can burn at based on the quality of that blank disc. It's just an automated process

    Cool

That's not quite how it works. The drive reads the ATIP from the CD-R/CD-RW and compares it with the information in the SmartBurn database. The ATIP contains information about the media including rate burning speeds. That is why most firmware upgrades will state "Better Media Compatibility". The media database has been upgraded usually to include more recently released media. Without the update the "unknown" media would not burn at the rated speed with Smartburn enabled but would be burnt at a more moderate speed setting. It would be grand if AverageJoe could post the ATIP of the 8X media that he's achieving 52X results with.

I don't know exactly what type of media this is. I know that it's compusa brand that I bought 2-3 years ago and that it has no label on top, just the silver. They're also 650meg cd's.
