I cant figure out why this is....

I "upgraded" from the SBLiveXPDrvUpdate.exe drivers to the LiveDrvPack.exe drivers at the end of the summer like probably most people have.

This is the thing that doesnt make any sense: The older drivers SOUND better with mp3s for some reason. Bass is punchier, and highs sound crisper and more present. Midrange is more balanced and less harsh. And the hardware bass and treble controls work better with them as well. The newer drivers bass would be very muddy and undefined. When i tried to increase that with the hardware tone controls, it seemed like the upper bass frequencies were being augmented, making it even more muddy. Now, i can accept the fact that the EQ might not work the same way, but leaving it at default settings still has the muddy problem mentioned before.

Shouldnt drivers not really affect direct PCM sound? I didnt have EAX enabled or anything like that.

In any case, i'm back to the old drivers.

no offence blppt, but once creatie stopped releasing a driver for that card, it was pretty much dead product. I think its time for you to move on.

Um dude, that Live Driver pack i spoke of was just released this summer. ;-)

But yes, after i replace this monitor, which is on its deathbed, my next adventure will be either a Santa Cruz or an Audigy2 OEM.

I'm pretty eager to get rid of my Live!Value. When we built this computer the budget got a little thin and the soundcard suffered for it. 18 months later and my "temporary" card is still there.
Windows 9x: 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor, written by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

I know the feeling. In my case it was 256 vs 512MB DDR or a Santa Cruz retail. I went with the RAM, and i guess in the end it was the *right* decision, but now i have to replace the monitor, so it looks like the Live will be with me for a while.
