What OS are you running? Judging by your specs, it's probably Windows 2000 or later. If that's the case, there's nothing that can be adjusted to help your speed. Even in older OSes like 95, there's nothing you can really do to increase your connection speed.

What I would recommend is the following:

    1) Delete your temporary internet files.
    2) Defragment your hard drive.
    3) Possibly reformat- that always speeds things up considerably.
    Ceiling Cat is watching you.

There are strings that you can enter and supposedly in line 98 they worked, maybe noticably. But as the other post states they dont do much if anything. They also depend upon your ISP's settings and what they can handle so you would have to call them and ask them. I forget what they are called. Sorry.

I would go into your browser and delete cookies and temp files. Then set max size for temp files to say 20 mb at most. Also go into windows explorer and delete every dang single folder and file under the Temp folder. Any that are there that you actually needed for some reason will be recreated with no help from you.

Try out Diskeeper Lite. It is free and can be found out at Cnet.com. It is a very good defragmentation tool and appears not to break security devices such as Soft ID or VPN like tools. Run it once a month.

Check out cacheman. Also free. It manages your memory, something MS has not been able to get their OS's to do very well.

    try these two programs

    Easy MTU and
    Modem Dr.

They can help you tweak all those setting that your computer uses when modem dialing.

however there is no quarantee that you will see hugh results.

just avoid the hassle of strings altogether. ive tried multiple times to get strings to work back when i have 28.8k and 56.6k, and each time, i got performance that was a) slightly below that of a no string configuration, or b) sucked major ***. Heed my words of wisdom!

had it occured to you maybe it's connecting at a relatively low connect speed for a reason?

If line noise is the reason, then even if you do manage to force it to connect to a higher speed, it'll just drop right back down again due to line noise. Even if it doesnt drop back down in speed, your throughput will be quite low as every few blocks it will have to retransmit blocks of data that are corrupted or never arrived.

40k isnt low. Typical is around 44k-46k or so. Dont let those people who tell you they connect at 50k get to you, speed difference isnt that huge.

    This is where you stand:

You mess with the modem strings, it won't be better.

You install other software, it won't be better and you have yet more bloatware on your system. More unnecessary registry entries.

You leave the modem alone, it won't be better.

I'm on a 56k here and there isn't a lot you can do to make it quicker apart from getting a broadband account.
