Motion to remove all comments about HD reliability from this forum
Who else is sick of hearing "What do you guys think of X HD?"
"Man brand X sucks I had 1 drive fail on me, get brand Y"
"No way I had brand Y drive fail on me, get a brand z drive"
1 person cannot make an accurate judgement on brand/model reliability.
remember that storage review has a reliability survey now.
That is all

Most times people post their opinions on HD's its because someone has asked about their experiences with 'x' hard drive. If they wanted to know the exact reliability well thats not possible, so they do the next best thing and ask us.

that's why u call it a "comment" or "opinion" ... u really don't have to believe what they told u but it's based on their "own" experience with the said brand/model

Well, when a large group of people say that a certain drive is known for crashing & collecting bad sectors, there's probably some truth to it. An example would be IBMs 60/75 gxp line of drives which MANY, not just a few people, but many people have complained about failing on them. Its even gone as far as ibm taking the 75 gxps off the market because so many of them failed. This is not saying everyones ibm drive fails, i bet there a many people who have those drives & they work just fine.

Ahh but see these people do not have enough information to back up their claims.
It's one thing to say not to get a 75/60GXP, it's another thing to say not to get a 180GXP just because it's made by IBM.
I still hold a grudge against WD because of 2 1.2GB drives that died many years ago, but I don't go around telling everyone that WD sucks.
Someone doesn't know whether i'm basing my opinion as a network admin that has built 1000 computers, or a 15 year old kid who has had 1 drive fail on them.
See where i'm going? Which is why I say to use the reliability survey at storage review. The more people that enter their drives, the more accurate the survey. Then we can see some hard numbers about who has the most reliable drives.

That I have to agree with. I am sick and tired of hearing all these people trash IBM, who probably never have owned an IBM hard drive to begin with.

Master of the obvious
Reliability opinions are a waste of space in this forum.. Unless a drive series is KNOWN to have issues all are equally likely to fail IMHO..

definately. you'll hear people that have had horror stories about each andevery brand, therefore they'll steer clear of that brand from now on, but that by no means means that it's an unreliable company. my friend went through several WD drives, where as i still have on on another rig that has been doing fine for several years now. of course we all know that the IBM "deathstar" had some issues, so that's definately an exception.
