GO BENGALS!!!!!
Intel and AMD fight for price
Check this out from www.geek.com: http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/20...1119017379.htm
It looks like AMD needs to do something soon. It looks like Intel is catching up with them on the pricing.

I thought Intel caught up months ago though.

Good for AMD to have their price up a little bit. Now they will actually make some money for each chip they sell. and yeah, this is a bit old news

Well i even hate to admit it but i think Intel ist moving its price to compete with AMD really but simply becuse it is getting cheaper. Amd cant afford to move and Intel knows this so if they just park along side AMD for awhile AMD has no advantages.

Intel's prices have come down because everything gets bumped down when they release a new chip...with the 2.6, 2.8, and 3.06 coming out each time they lowered the older cpus one notch. The only place where AMD has had the price advantage was the low end, and that was only when they dropped the low xp's below 100 bucks.

When it comes to gaming with some of these modern games with huge AI loads i dont think the P4 comes close the AMD CPU's.
Clearly AMD lead the way in ALU(arithmatic) speed while intel lead in FPU(floating point) performance Which is great for 3D rendering and proffesional media apps.
An XP 1800+ has roughly the same ALU score as a P4 2Ghz but its FPU is much lower. These days the FPU isnt so important in games since its plenty fast enough on either platform.
An XP2000+ will kill a P4 2Ghz in AI intensive games like BF1942 at max AI or Mafia etc where arithmatic speed is the bottleneck.
Benchmarks never reflect this. They seem more concerned with rendering speed under little AI load. Obviously with no AI load the higher FPU speed of the P4 wins.
I would love to see how they compare in BF1942 at max AI settings.
I believe AMD of the same PR rating And simular DDR memory
will reign supreme and thats whats inportant to me right now. Honestly i dont know what ppl see in P4's unless they are proffesional 3D modellers or enjoy throwing good money away.
As far as im concerned, AMD CPU's should be more expensive tho im quite happy they're not.
Just my 2c.

GB, you summed up what I think and what has been my line of thought in the last 2 years.
Some will object to your post, with far-fetched tech jargon/explanations, BUT, one look at SEVERAL competent reviewers, one sweeping look at dozens of reviews, one survey estimating the percentage of "pro gamers" and OCers that own a AMD product and stick to AMD would tell anyone interested that AMD has fine products that compete with INTEL's, surpassing these even at times, and always remaining the better choice when it comes to the price/stability/performance vectors.
I too am happy with AMD's prices, though I wouldn't mind paying a bit more (not as much as we would pay for INTEL's offerings, o'course) if that could help the company.
Those that think INTEL establishes its prices based solely on market tendencies either don't have all the facts or choose to ignore them. INTEL is in a better positiom right now to overwhelm entirely AMD, and they will do it if they so choose it. But in the past 2 years INTEL was forced to take into account the threat posed by AMD, and it showed: lower and lower prices.

Now that Intel prices are about the same I see no reason whatsoever to buy an AMD. Why? Intel = cooler + more overclock for the same price. What else is there to say? Hyper-threading rules and soon all the chips will be upgraded to include it so AMD is beginning to get in deep water.

The P4 only has the FPU advantage when the program can take advantage of SSE2 instructions. Without that support the AMD hands down has a much stronger FPU. However, with Intel developing their own compilers and making sure developers know how to use them and program to optimize for the P4, many more applications are starting to take advantage of that.
