How much RAM for gaming???
Is 256mb enough or will the slowdowns be bothersome enough to warrant shelling out another 56 bucks for 512? Assume most newer games will be played. Thanks!

I'd add another 256MB stick.

If your games are all a year old or more, then you'll rarely see a difference. However, some of the newer games (like Battlefield 1942) show definite speedups (especially when loading maps) if you have more than 256MB.

If you can afford it, go for 512mb. I went from 512mb to 1.5Gb (a while back, though..no longer have that system)..honestly, I didn't notice much of a difference - 512mb seems to be the best place to be.

If you're running Win9x, it's hard to recommend anything more than 256MB as you can start running into problems. If it's Win2000/XP, frankly I'd look at 512MB as a minimum... not so much for gaming, but just for general computer use. 256MB is enough, but it leaves you almost no headroom and you're going to be accessing the pagefile like crazy.
I'm even at the point where 512MB isn't doing it for me anymore. I've been playing around with 3D applications, and I've seen times where one particular program (Poser) was using as much as 300MB of RAM. Ouch!
