    doom 3 alpha

downloaded it a while ago but had no exe file.had an application only but could not open up any other files.when clicking on the application it just opens a window for a split second.it was a 372mb file so should be the complete program.another one i downloaded was a proper zip file but was corrupt.downloading now but i think its the first one again.i read on another forum you can get it running somhow but cannot find it again-anyone know for sure.im limited in the number of places i can get it from as it is quite hard to find and p2p is slow

Been a while since I had it installed, but as far as I can remember, it was a simple unzip.

Doom 3 will typically be packed into a WinRAR archive. Inside you will find the necessary files to load the game (Primarily the .exe).

WinRAR is a windows program similar to Winzip that can handle RAR files, in addition to ZIP files. Check out http://www.rarsoft.com

i just used winace, i double clicked on the file and it took a while for it to open, and then i clicked on the folder inside and there are three items in the folder, and then i unzipped them. at first nothing appeared tohappen then after about 5 mins of waiting it started unzipping.

i can tell already that this game is going to be rediculously scary

and it looks really nice to, except my 8500 kept running our of vertex cache

Hmm, try deleting the Doomconfig.cfg and see if that helps. Yeah, I'm being serious . The game rebuilds it if it can't find it.

Not sure if that'll help but maybe..

Basically the game runs off the .exe. It doesn't install on your computer, but runs live off the .exe file. I used winrar to open it and ran the executable. Then used alt-enter to go full screen. Don't try to use the menu that pops up. You need to press the tilde (~) button and type the map names into the console in order to load the maps. This game really will change the way we look at pc games. It's very realistic looking and very atmospheric. Can't wait.

I've had the same problem with Quake 3, whether it's related or not i don't know. But are you trying to launch the game from a desktop shortcut? I know it sounds weird, but i created a short cut for quake 3 and it gave the same error, weird eh? But if you run the executable from it's folder in explorer it worked for me. It may be because i didn't actually 'install' quake the normal way, the same would apply for doom3 as its not actually installed, as mentioned earlier it just runs live.
when it loads, bring down the console window and type the map of your choice:

    map e3/e3_1
    map e3/e3_2
    map e3/e3_3

    I think that's it, my memory isn't the best - it's been a while.
