Please Help...whats Dead?
Just received new components for my computer: a pentium 4 2.4ghz ( 533 fsb version), asus P4s533 mobo and samsung 2700 Ram ( 512mb)... Now I am installing this in an old case along with a geforce 4600, sb audigy, 60gb maxtor HD,etc...
The problem is, I set everything up correctly, everything is in the proper sickets, all power connectors are connected, the green light on the mobo is on when I plug it in... BUT when I hit the power button, it doesnt boot up. The fans/CDs start spinning, but the screen stays black ( I know it cant be the video card because I am using the very same one in the computer I am on right now...along with the cd rom/dvd/sound card ), no beeps , nothing. I've tried resetting the cmos and I've tried manual frequency seetings, to no luck. I am leaning towards a bad CPU as when I removed the CPU and turned the system on, its the same effect, everything spins, but no image. Or can it be bad memory? ( I cant test it since my other computer is using RDRAM...cant test DDR on it). Please, any advice'd be appreciated.
Thanks

This may sound kind of odd, but you may want to make sure that the back of your power supply is set at 115v. My buddy built a computer and he had the same exact problems you have, where the lights and everything came on, but he had a black screen and it was caused by the fact that he wasn't get the right amount of power. His power supply was set at 220v, when he needed 115v for it to work in the US. If this isn't the case for you, then you may want to try a different power supply, I recommend nothing less than 350 watt.

Take off the vide ocard. It the computer still not start (u'll ear a beep or hd working if it does) then it's not the GF4. One thing, look in your mainboard manual, there is something on the board that says what is working bad (I believe it says it from the internal speaker of something).
When you are sure it's not video related, put it back in, unplug everything else (hd cdrom audio card) Just keep your GF4, mem and pcu (and fans if I have to mention it). If it still doesn't start, either mainboard cpu or mem works bad. Oh by the way I'm using something similar to your (same board/mem)

Well, I've also received a new case and tried it with it ( along with a new PSU )...also hooked up the internal speaker...which is now saying " Fail memory test" or some such...so I guess its a bad memory stick, or maybe its not supported ( I've Samsung 2700 512mb stick ). Strangely, the system started up twice and I was able to get to the bios setup, but both times it stalled :/
Gona run to a store after new year's and try maybe PC 2500 or so memory to see if it works...

The P4S533 has support for 4 banks PC2700 DDR.
Your memory is supported by the board, but that doesn't mean you didn't get a faulty module.
Have you tried reseating the memory?

I am starting to think that the motherboard might be the culprit. I've tried it with 2 different video cards now ( radeon+ge4), and I also went to the store and got me different DDR memory...now the case speaker says what is faulty....but it is so fuzzy, now that I think of it, I'm not sure what is being said, either faulty memory or VGA ( which neither is as both those components work in other computers )...So I'm leaning towards RMA'ing the whole order ( I've got it from Newegg ). And of course, I tried taking out the cards/chips, etc...

Well, figured it out finally. Was a bad CPU. After I listened to the fuzzy recording on the mobo that tells you what is wrong, both me and my room mate agreed that its saying " CPU " . That would explain it then if 2 different memory sticks dont work, 2 different PSUs, video cards, HDs... ( mobo works ). Well gona RMA it with newegg...a shame really, was hoping for a new year's present for myself :/ shame I gota wait till Thursday to mail the cpu out.
