P4 3.06
Asus P4G8X (or P4SDX, which'll be released soon)
2*256MB sticks of Mushkin pc3200 (from mushkin directly)
Hercules Radeon 9700 Pro
Doesn't get much better than that.
As for cooling, if you're talking about strictly air, either a Swiftech MCX4000 or Alpha PAL8942T with a Vantec Tornado 80mm.
...thinking about spending some money on something aside from audio, 1ctabor?

Pretty nice, you should pick up an A2 while you're at it. It'd be a worth-while upgrade from your current.

Another thing to take into consideration is wether the games will be more AI intensive or more graphics intensive for example battle 1942 with its great and complex AI would fair alittle better on the 2800+ but a game that is more graphics intense woudl fair alittle better on the 3.06. Games aside the 3.06 will pull aways ahead though due to the addition of HT which would beter suit someone who plans to run Kazaa in the background while listening to music and playing ut2k3. As far as ddr and rdr are concerned i would say go ddr because the performance istn that big of an issue between the 2 anymore with the advent of DCDDR and the price is going to be abotu the same but the current trend is showing that a ddr system will be a better upgrade path in the future now that most p4 systems are being built with ddr. And ddr2 will becoming one of these days along with true pc 4200 and so on. As far as graphics cards go latley the Athlon paired with the radeons seem to be performing bettet than the P4 paried with the radeons while the P4s seem to perform better with Nvidia than the athlons do. THG labs did a huge comparison chart not to long ago showing this.
As far as price performance ratio i think your best bet gaming wise is the 2800+ as far as pur performance the 3.06 would be a great addition. And if you plan to overclock the p4 would be alittle better route.

I believe if you took a XP2800+ with an Nforce 2 board paired with a 9700 Pro, it will perform 3dmark wise... on the same level as the 3.06ghz P4 w/ similar setup.
RDram is basically dead, so I don't think the agrument for it will last much longer.

Well if money is no object I think these two machines are pretty damn fast and should be able to play the linux version of quake 3 at some wicked speeds when they are upgraded all the way:
Sun Fire 15k
or
SGI Origin 3000
Ok, maybe that's a tad absurd, but that sun fire 15k would probably be the best $1.4 million you'll ever make in computing ability! well, that's just the base price...

A2's definitely worth it though. The bass is so much cleaner and tighter than my other.
I just picked hooked up my 17" Trinitron last night (G200) and it's VERY nice. Good luck with your new rig, if you need any help, I'm here, buddy.
I'm mainly just trying to get back in the swing of things with knowing whats what about CPU's and new memory. I won't be finishing my "super" computer for about 2 months, i have all the other parts to it already that aren't gonna change much until I get my tax return like case, monitor, drives, cables etc. Anything that can drop in price or come out new in 2 months i'm holding off buying like cpu, mobo, vid card. But meanwhile i'll be building up another xp1800+ system which I can do pretty cheap beings all the extra parts I already have. It'll be fun. And i'll definately look you up for any help I may need.
