    Should I reformat?

    I'm getting another motherboard and cpu, will I have to do a re install of windows xp or can I just remove the drivers?

    You don't have to format, but you must reinstall the OS.

    There's a huge difference between a reinstalling an OS and a format and install of everything.
    • One does not have to backup and reload data.
    • One does not have to reinstall applications.
    • One does not have to redo application settings.
    • One does not have to redo OS settings.
    • One does not have to redo desktop settings.

    But wouldn't it be a safer bet to do format and re-install an OS, based on a new mobo, due to new hardware configurations, drivers, and etc..

    REFORMAT!

    I had major problems about a week ago when i tried to install a new mobo/cpu without reformating. Take it from me, you will save yourself alot of headaches if you just reformat.

    erm lol... I've done this like 5 times in the past year without formatting (in fact, I haven't formatted in ~2 yearz) and I haven't had any probz. Maybe I just got lucky, tho.

    A glorious feature is XP's over-install. You can just install XP over your current installation. It saves your data & shiz and gives you a wonderfully fresh XP

    I didn't have to reinstall anything when I went from kt133 to kt333 and when I later switched processors. I just turned it off, swapped the hardware, let windows install new drivers and it worked. I may be just lucky but I'd backup your data and give that a shot. If that doesn't work I'd reformat. I also make it a habit of reformatting every 6 months or so to avoid buildup of junk on my hd.

    it's been around before XP


    just change the motherboard and on first boot boot of the Windows CD and when you go to install it will detect the previous install and allow you to reapir it, which is what you want to do
