Question When is Intel going to release newer processor than P4?

Do you have any idea when is intel going to release newer generation processors than intel p4? is prescott going to be considered as new generation or not compared to its technology?

Most likely Q4 2003. Yes, Prescott will be
considered a new generation for Intel...

Confirmed enhancements include 1MB L2 cache, Hyper-threading II, Prescott New Instructions (SSE3?) and stretched silicon technology.

Yeah, with AMD releasing a new family, you can bet you're bottom dollar that Prescot will be known as the Pentium 5.

Athkiaseros.Hm hm prescott will still use socket 478 on which p4 is based on.That doesn't mean that prescott is going to be named p4 but it's very likely

I think there's maybe a 10% chance prescot is called a P4. There's enough in the prescot for Intel to call it the P5 based on their past. The P2 and P3 used the same socket, and the only difference was SSE. 3 years is about tops for an intel family.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........prescott. (as I wipe the drool off the table)

I agree with Steppy, the chance of Prescott being a P5 is way more than it being a P4. They have had P4s for some time now. I mean look at the difference between Prescott and Willamette, HUGE difference. You have a different socket, 2 die shrinks, more instructions, hyperthreading, a crapload more cache. That is a lot of differences. There wasn't this much difference between P2 and P3. My money is placed solidly on P5.

At this point we don't know what changes Intel is making to Prescott, so it's probably premature to say whether it will still be called a P4 or not. There may also be some difficulty in calling it the P5, since P5 was the designation of the Pentium (classic) core, and could create some confusion. Then again, Intel has done this type of thing before, the 860 was a processor around 1990, and now i860 is a designation for an Intel chipset.

One thing to remember, is that despite anything else Intel is doing to it Prescott will still use the same basic core design as the Willamette and Northwood P4. I doubt the changes in Prescott will even be as large as those AMD made in going from the TBird, to Palomino cores, but that remains to be seen.

I remember reading a couple of years ago an article saying that Pentium 4 is the last 32-bit chip(I don't have the link, sorry).
If this statement is true then prescott will be still pentium 4 since it's a 32-bit chip right?

Hmm all those specs I.E.1MB L2 cache, Hyper-threading II, Prescott New Instructions (SSE3?) and stretched silicon technology + 64-Bit architecture for the desktop .. Ai Karumba i havent drooled this much in ages
and Oh yeah i forget the factor that evaporated my drool .. the "Intel Trademark" Price Tag

Heh heh..screw the price...I'm gettin me one of those bad boys. I can't wait for prescott. I really haven't been this excited over a CPU in quite some time. Hell I can't remember ever being this excited over a CPU.

I'll wait till the second speed grade on it comes out of course to help the price a little but thats it. The instant that second speed grade comes out, I'm on the first one

Also something that noone mentioned ; the new Prescott die will be at 0.09 ì and thus dissipate less heat than the Northwood core.

And yes, from what I've read around, the Prescott will be launched as Pentium 5 in Q3 or Q4 2003, depending on the state of the CPU industry by then (i.e. AMD ). I just can't wait...

Actually I did mention it. I said "2 die shrinks" Which would be from .18 at willamette to .13 northwood to .09 prescott

I had heard rumors of some other parts of the core being double pumped like the ALU's in current P4's.

Quite a few parts of the current core are double pumped. The ALUs, the AGU, and the scheduler just to name a few.
