u160 SCSI stuff

Hey, I have a friend that blew some cash on some fast storage hardware.

For starters, he got the Seagate Cheetah X15 ST336752LC which is 36.7GB and runs at 15,000RPM. It has an 80-pin SCA interface.

Now he needs a controller, so he bought the Adaptec 19160 u160 SCSI controller, which has one 68-pin connector for LVD SCSI and one 50-pin for Ultra SCSI.

Obviously you can see the problem at hand. I have a 80-pin drive and a 68 or 50-pin controller. Here's what I told him to do but I don't know if I'm right:

I told him to buy a typical 68-pin cable and an adapter that converts 68-pin to 80-pin. Will this work? It doesn't sound like it does, but there are so many denominations of SCSI, I really don't know. I don't use it

It will work. the 68 pin connection handles data whereas the 80 pin connection handles data and power.

by the way, what do you think of Windows .NET? I've got Enterprise Server 3663, and both Standard and Enterprise 3718. I've been trying to get some over some financial hurdles before I build a server for my room (i'm 15, well, 16 in a couple days), and if I recall correctly you're an IT celebrity or something of that effect. What do you think of 3718?

I have the U160 LSI controller (68 pin) and the 80pin version of the Seagate x15.3 drive. Just make sure you get a good adapter. I bought mine for $20 from www.hypermicrosystems.com . I believe they still have free shipping as an option if you mention storagereview.com as a reference.

This setup works flawlessly btw.
