DVD-R Media?
Any recommendation on what media is good and what media should I avoid? I've only tried Memorex DVD-R media and it has been working fine. These are about $3.00 a disc (in jewel case). I wanted to ask around before I go and buy a 50-pack spindle. What price should I expect to pay for them?
One more thing... These DVD-Rs are "General Use/Non-Authoring". Are there other types? What is the difference?
Thanks!

My Ritek's are pretty nice. It seemed to me at first that they get surface scratches pretty quick, but I found out I can actually wipe them off by a little cleaning. Tried them on different DVD-ROM's and they work great time after time.
Here are some good sites for DVD media...

Thanks for the info!
Is the media you are using 1X only?

here's another site
and another
I bought some Optodisc dvd-rs, and they have worked out nicely, only 1 coaster, which was my fault. I've used 2x media, but that was brand name media and was really expensive.

I've had good luck with Riteks. I pick them up from various sellers on Ebay for less than $1 per disc. I believe most of the discs I've purchased are rated 1X, but I've always been able to burn them at 2X.

I've read that to burn 1X media at 2X you need specific drives with specific firmware (i.e. it does not work on all drives). Does anyone know what drives with what firmware support burning media at higher that rated speeds?
On that note, is there a reason to lock burn speed at what the media is rated (like a "media lock") other than forcing you to buy more expensive media? I've always been able to burn CD-R media at speeds higher than what the media is rated...
Thanks!

I thought I heard that with some media and firmware that if you try and burn at a higher speed than the media is rated, i.e. 1x media at 2x, it may cause permanent damage to your drive.
Search on google for the firmware you are looking for.
I also had a question, has anyone used double-sided discs, and if so what brand did you use?

Off the top of my head, I believe the Pioneer A105 allows the faster burning of 1X rated media. I'm using the Sony DRU500 (with firmware 1.0f). I would think other drives are capable of it, but I can't say for certain which drives.

I do not know of double-sided 9.4GB DVD-R media, because I haven't used it. But double-sided DVD-RAM media works great. I haven't seen double-sided DVD-RWs, those I would like to try.

A04 allows to burn 1X Ritek's at 2X with an updated firmware. The A05 on the other hand does not, at least not yet (need's a new firmware).
There is no such thing as a true 9.4gb DVD-/+R/W disc. They are simply 2 discs glowed back to back. Which is really pointless... lol since you won't be able to label your DVD disc.

so it's two physical discs glued together, meaning it would be two discs thick? Seems hard to believe.
as for the labels, that why you put them in cases

It kind of is....it's a dual sided DVD. Dual layer ones (real ones, not burnable ones since there aren't any) are put together after being pressed I believe...not having a dual layer media is partially due to technalogical limitations, and partially due to the MPAA not wanting easily burnable DVD-9s.

While on the subject, anyone know where I can get a working link to the Pioneer avr-104 / a04 firmware. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/pioneer.html doesnt work for me, I get a 500 ISE error. Might have to get those Riteks soon, my computer is full of things I need to burn to DVD but I still haven't got it working the way I want.
