Strange title. After having read the article the future seems much darker for Sun and HP, not AMD. Intel's still the incredible company it always was, but I doubt this signals the end for AMD.

It won't affect AMD too much. The Itanium2 is not for users like us, but rather for corporations and agencies that actually need hardcore number crunching. AMD will be fine.

Based on IBM stating they don't think AMD will be around in five years in the high end market. AND whether or not the new intel chip is a big success can make or break them.

That Article has little to nothing to do with were AMDs Market is and the guy who wrote it makes it sound like in 5 years we will all have itaniums. I dont think this signals didily squat for AMD. It is IBM who should be worried but they have a new cpu comming to so there isnt much to worry about. I think itanium will penitrate quite a bit but not as much as Intel wants it to because SUN and IBM are just ot big in the extreme high end ultra crucher market it is like AMD thinking they can break Intel with hammer it wont happen maybe after 10 years of great thigns but not one product. This writer doesnt know much about the high end market.

yeah the Itanium 2 looks like a beast of a processor. But its not going to sway anything by itself, as joerg said almost never does ONE product totally rearrange an entire market. IBM and Sun have been doing this for years, they are quasi microsoftish when it comes to 64bit computers. Even if you do have a superior product you have to unbrain wash the people that make the decisions.

I mean if you want to debate pure wealth and market Authority, This is no longer the Desktop world, IBM is THE big fish and could buy and sell Intel like a used car ir push comes to shove.

Well, IBM is currently working with AMD on Opteron and may start manufacturing the chips for AMD. If it works out, this could be a huge plus for AMD. Especially if Opteron works as promised. If it does, Intel (supposedly) will fall back on Yamhill - thus compromising their Itanium project. I just don't see Itanium breaking AMD's back.

I find this ironic coming from the same people that told us ~40 years ago that computers will be only owned by millionares and that they would fill up a whole room. LOL. and no AMD won't just go away from high end in 5 years, thats rediculous.
