    Laptop Email Problem

    Have my email account setup on my desktop computer and it works fine. My router is working fine.

    On my Dell laptop, I have the email account and it's connections set exactly like the desktop.

    Problem:

    My laptop will connect to the net and work fine. The laptop will send email but not RECEIVE email. All the account info on the laptop email is set EXACTLY like the desktop computer.

    Question:

    Why won't the laptop RECEIVE email when hooked to the router?

    If it is mail from the same pop3 account, it is because your desktop has received the mail already and there is nothing for the laptop to receive. Your e-mail client may have a setting to leave mail on the server until it is explicitly deleted. If so, you will be able to receive the mail on your laptop as well as your desktop.

    I have my laptop configured this way and my desktop is configured to always leave mail on the server. My laptop is my primary machine. Both machines use Outlook 2002 (not Outlook Express).

    Thank you for your reply. I'm not real sharp abt this stuff.

    How do I determine:

    "Your e-mail client may have a setting to leave mail on the server until it is explicitly deleted. "

    My mail/news are through Verizon DSL.

    What program (client) are you using to get your mail from the Verizon mail server? There are many available.

    Do not know what you mean (program-client) ??

    How do I determine client?

    Using:

    WinXP Home
    IE Outlook6

    Your client is Outlook Express.

    I don't have it available so I can't give you a step by step guide.

    You should have a menu item for options. You'll have to explore the settings.

    On another note, I assumed that you can browse the Internet from your laptop computer. If you can't, there are other issues to resolve.

    imap account

    You want an imap account, if they support it. That way, you can leave a copy of your email on the server also. POP3 downloads the emails to your local computer, as ua549 pointed out. You have two options -

    ONE: I don't use a pop3 account, but for some, you can go to tools
    --> accounts, and check a box under your account settings for "leave a copy of each message on the server," or something like this.

    TWO: If not, do this, IF YOUR ISP SUPPORTS IT! Check to make sure they support both IMAP and POP3 accounts.

    Go to tools, then accounts (in the toolbar)
    then Add --> mail
    when you get to the "incoming server names" page --) choose "imap" under "my incoming mail server is:"

    you may need to get information from you ISP, since sometimes the imap and pop3 server names are different.

    once your account is set up, exit the accounts menu and click on the account name in the account listing, (the left frame, under "folders") and check all of the boxes for syncronization. Synchronize the accounts.

    Finally, drag ALL of the messages from your OLD POP3 account listing to the folders you want the messages to be in in your new account.

    When you synchronize again, the messages that were no longer on your server should be copied to the mail server, and be available to all pcs, provided they are set up to use IMAP.

    Delete the POP3 account.
