bizzare problem with GeForce2 MX card

I rebuilt my parents PC about a month ago, and I set it up with Windows XP because my dad wanted to have control over who installed programs and everything…and didn’t want to deal with the way 2K does all of that. Starting about 2 weeks ago he started having weird problems with the video display on the PC, it is incredibly hard to describe though. Its like it doesn’t load all of the images that should be displayed, the PC will lock up, and the monitor clicks off and on like the display is out of its frequency range…and then it will come back.

    System Specs

    • AMD Athlon T-Bird 1.2 GHz
    • Epox 8K7A+
    • 256 MB PC2100 Crucial
    • Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 MX
    • Soundblaster Live! Value
    • 3Com 3C905-B 10/100 NIC
    • 40GB Maxtor 7200RPM ATA/100 HDD
    • Pioneer 106s Slot Load DVD-ROM
    • Lite-On 40/12/40 CD-RW
    • NEC MultiSync FE700

Has anyone ever seen a similar problem? I can try to explain it in greater detail if needed. The problem seems to occur with most applications…most noticeably when using Internet Explorer and when connecting remote applications via Citrix.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

let me make sure i understand what's going on. so you are dual booting with winXP and win2k right? has the gfx card ever worked in winXP properly at all? you could go to "add / remove programs" in the control panel and remove the nvidia driver. then reboot and let windows redetect the video card. see if that helps.

The card worked properly in XP for about a week...then all hell broke loose, for lack of a better phrase.

I left 2K on the system as a fail safe...in case we ran into problems with XP.

Windows XP is garbage, just stick with Windows 2000. It is way better than XP.

You might need to upgrade your BIOS for the gfx card to work in Windows XP. For instance, I used to have a Legend QDI Advance 10F. I had a Geforce 2 MX(A Hercules). It worked perfectly on Windows 98SE but when I put Windows ME on it and I ran 3D aplications(games)it would blue screen. Anyway, I sold that Computer with a ATI Radeon 64 meg card(I kept the Geforce 2 MX card) and it works perfectly on Windows ME.

A friend of mine(A Computer Expert) told after I sold it, If I would've updated the BIOS the Geforce 2 MX would have work fine.

    Hope that helps.

Except that isn't the solution I'm looking for. Like I said, my dad likes XP, we're just having this problem. Sheesh...
