Question Whats a good laptop brand?

Anyone with laptops out there or opinions on brands. I am looking at buying a laptop, not worried about system specs or pricing yet but I was wondering what brands are the best to look at going for eg Acer, Toshiba, Sony etc etc?

Almost 90% of the laptops in the world are made to specifications by the same contract manufacturing company. Your first quality choice is whether to buy a consumer level machine or a commercial quality machine. They are quite different as is the support and the cost. Look at the model, not just the brand.

There are huge differences between Dell Inspiron line of consumer grade notebooks and the Lattitude and Precision lines of commercial grade notebooks. Ditto for the HP Pavillion vs. HP Omnibook and the Compaq Presario vs. Compaq Evo.

I have a Compaq Evo N610c notebook that I purchased last autumn. I like it very much. When the Fujitsu disk started to cause a problem, Compaq sent me a replacement disk via air express that arrived within ~12 hours - no questions asked. I did not have to go through the usual "Did you do this? Try that." routine that is common with consumer grade products. They even prepaid the return shipping of the old unit!
