Can anyone explain how hz & fps are not the same?
http://forums.massassi.net/html/Forum1/HTML/027092.html
And frequency is....? Cycles / Time. 20 FPS = 20 Frames / 1 Second = 20 Hz. If a pendulum has a period of 2 seconds it has a frequency of 0.5 Hz. Monitor refresh rate and framerate are no different.
GAH.

for the most part i've noticed that most people on other computer forums are literally retard as to what they know about this, I'm sure as hell that the refresh rate of a monitor and FPS in a game have NOTHING to do with each other. run a game at 60hz refresh and then at the highest (85hz) and see if you notice a difference in FPS (and i mean big difference). but i say it's not even worth arguing with idiots, they'll never believe what is said unless it's comming out of their mouths.

Sometimes you wonder who these people are in society. Luckily here at Sharky there aren't that many people like that. I sometimes wonder how a person like that exists in life. The sad part about that is it doesn't look like he is joking.
Dude, you missed the best part:

If you're running at 25fps, does that mean you're running at 25hz refresh rate? No...I can tell a flicker at 60hz..even at 200fps. I can't see flickering at 75hz. You could set a white screen with no moving objects...any framerate you want (it is a static white background). 60hz vs 85hz -- according to your logic, they're the same...but the 60hz screen will have a noticable flicker (to me, anyways).
then this
What in blazes are you talking about? Hz is the unit for frequency. Pay attention.

He's not...I just typed a somewhat wordy reply..we'll see what happens..

I'll go really slow, then...
1) Put a static image on your desktop.
2) Tell me what framerate it's running at. If your refresh rate is 60Hz, it's 60fps?
3) Set your refresh rate to 85hz. Is your framerate now 85fps? Note: I cannot notice a flicker at 85hz..but I can at 60hz.
4) Now, run a game...at 1600x1200x32bit max detail..or whatever's enough to bring your computer to its knees. Let's say your refresh rate is still at 85hz, from where you left it..but your game framerate is only 15fps. Pause the game. I can't tell a flicker at 85hz...if the game is paused, are you running at 85fps (refresh rate)? Resume the game. You're running at 15fps..did your refresh rate just drop? If so, how..considering your refresh rate, unlike framerate..is STATIC? When you're running at 15fps @ 85hz, the screen isn't flickering. It's choppy, sure..but not flickering. However, 60fps at 60hz is going to flicker. This depends on the person..some people don't mind 60hz. It drives me crazy.

In the end he knew what he was talking about... he just forgot that there are many numbers and units that ppl automatically associate with one specific thing :P
No, I meant FPS can be expressed as frequency. Frames Per Second - a series of events per a time unit *is* frequency, thus Hz.
And yes. If you play a game at 200 FPS on an 85 Hz monitor you'll get tearing. You're only actually seeing 85 frames per second, but since the buffer gets updated before the monitor finishes refreshing you end up getting a not-so-delightful mix of frames. This graphical defect is ugly and the option to turn off v-synch is only there for benchmarking. If you play the game so it's v-synched (the right way to play ) the backbuffer won't flip until the screen has finished updating - the game is effectively locked at 85 FPS.
The flickering isn't related to desktop framerate. The monitor frequency is the number of times the monitor is scanned per second (which is, in itself, intrinsically related to the actual visible framerate). If you view an image on an 85 Hz monitor you *are* viewing it at 85 FPS.
Peace.

Man, I just looked back at my earlier post, I was a little bit harsh. HAHA At least he admitted he was wrong, he is a decent guy I guess.

He's not a bad guy...seems as there was quite a misunderstanding..but the way it was worded, it was saying they're one and the same..

lol..update..there's now two of them trying to explain..when I know exactly what I'm talking about.
Their position is that the monitor is refreshing at (eg) 85hz..so you're seeing 85fps all the time. My position is of 'practical' framerate...like you see in all these benchmarks..anybody else agree with what I'm trying to say? I see their point..but jeez, I thought mine was fairly obvious.

Dude I was trying to explain your point to him. Did you miss the
"It still is going to be choppy if the game is only giving you 15. Its the "in game" frame rate that matters. That is also what we are referring to when we talk about framerate"
