    Blue Screen When Inserting CD

Well, Im running' good old win 98se on my comp here, everything works fine and stuff. Except that when I stick a CD-ROM in my CD-ROM drive, I get a blue screen and have to restart my damn computer.

The comp was just sitting there for a couple years getting dust,(since 2000 I think), the Video card and CD-rom drive (to a dvd drive if that matters any) were replaced, but everything worked fine, for a while. Now It gives me the darn error.

Swapped the DVD drive for another dvd drive, same error.

Any help/suggestions for this lil pikachu would be appreciated.

    Cool

Try uninstalling any packet writing programs (DirectCD, InCD etc,.) you may have installed.
Try disconnecting the drive from the controller and restart the computer without it, then shut down, reconnect and restart.
Check the connections and jumpers to ensure correct settings.
Remove the controller in Device Manager and restart the computer so Windows can redetect and reinstall it.

    Cool

First, check to ensure that the Master/Slaver jumper on the drive is set properly.
Check to see that the IDE ribbon cable is seated properly in the connectors. You might even want to try another cable to identify/eliminate the cable as the source of the problem.
Check the settings for the IDE Controllers in the BIOS.

It is also conceivable that your power supply is an issue. It might not be able to handle the components and the initializing of the CD drive by inserting the CD could be the "straw that breaks the camel's back". If possible, temporarily disconnect some components that also uses the +12V rail to see if that is the case.

    Hope this is helpful.

These's nothing else sharing power there with the dvd drive..

I should try to get a new IDE cable, but that'll take a while...

Bha...Im giving up on this..next week Im getting a new damn pc (see January extreme pc guide for an idea on specs..)

    [updaTe]

Well, I stuck a CD in there, and It was able to detect the name of the CD and actually go down to the folders, then [blue screen].

Now that I think about it, it most likely is a power issue. This is an old comp, and when I bought it, it was far from bring "high end". So there's a big chance the power supply isn't all that well. Moving from a cd to dvd should draw more power...thats a good explanation..
Now to go beg for a cd drive >.<

    [update2]
    Bah it works now. Geepers.
