Question Finally some Free time but what game to buy? Planetside?

Hey everyone, I've finally got some free time on my hands since my school year (college) just ended recently. What game do you reccomend? I look at reviews of what is out and what people are playing but it seems as if the world of PC games is in a slump right now with no new material-do you all feel planetside will be worth the purchase? What do you all find yourselves playing and what do you feel would be an enjoyable game to spend some time on (preferably something new)? Thanks.

    Quiet PC.

from what I've heard planetside really isn't a good buy right now since it's got a few bugs...maybe wait for a few patches or something....I don't speak from experience though since I've never played it...however one game that I would recommend is battlefield 1942 and the desert combat mod...I just played this for the first time today and it was a blast...I was playing for two hours straight...also you might want to check out grand theft auto: vice city or splinter cell...although splinter cell is a fun game it won't last for very long...the game itself is realatively short and there's no sdk or level editor available (nor will there ever be one) so there isn't a whole lot going for it...but vice city or bf1942 (along with the free desert combat mod) would be my picks...

I was/am in the beta for planetside. I thought it got boring very quickly. Do a search for planetside beta and you will find a very long thread detailing our opinions.

www.planetside.com has a forum that you can check out. im in the beta and i liked it alot. only prob is the xp is too low, it takes too long to capture a base (15 mins wait), if you dont have a vehicle certification, it takes while to get places unless you catch a ride.
Never argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I was also in the planetside beta (stopped playing after the last character wipe). The first few days you play it it's an awesome game, but that wears off quickly. The game has no "real" objective. I mean atleast in CTF or capture based objective games, you can say you "won" or something to that effect. But in planetside, its nothing more than taking over bases (that all look exactly alike if you ask me) and then letting the enemy take it over so you can take it back to gain more EXP. After you reach the maximum level (which is BR20) theres nothing more to the game than running around and capping bases for no reason. I mean I know all FPS are pretty much like that, but this one just gets old REALLY fast.

So my suggestion to you is to spend your money elsewhere, or atleast wait until they release some kind of expansion pack or patch that actually adds a little depth to game. Because after you buy it, in a month you will easily be tired of it.

I think alot of these people complaining about it getting old and being buggy tend to forget it is a beta. Betas are meant to catch bugs, hence there being bugs in the game. Do not complain about a game that isn't even a final version yet.

I liked the game. It gave an atmosphere that I have been wishing for since Tribes 2, bf1942 was crap in my opinion; same old, same old for gameplay. The squad play itself is great, plus paying will keep all the whiners and cheaters out of the game. For people complaining about no content. They plan on implementing things, check out the website to see what is coming out. The reason they don't talk about more features to come is probably so they don't hype something up and never come out with it.

this is a team game, which is for specializing and working together. it encourages these things with the exp. if you are one of those people that want to hop from being a heavy assualt to a tank driver all in one night, don't buy this game. the xp system is there to make you specialize, otherwise this would be a normal fps. i like the system like this. i love working with squads, and each person having specific tasks. it gives more a team feel to the game.

I have not gotten bored of this game and plan on buying it tomorrow. I have switched certs a few times and no with the new vehicles coming that things should be even more fun, mmmmm bomber.

I played 3 games of warcraft 3 the other day and found it thoroughly satisfying. I've never played bf1942 before but it did catch my interest somewhat-is it a pay to play title?

bf1942 is not a pay to play game...it's a world war 2 game and you just join a server...it's maps are obviously not as big as planetside or world war 2 online or anything...but it supports up to 64 players and it's quite fun I think...

I liked planetside a lot, was in the beta. However, as other people have pointed out, it is a bit buggy and there is no real objective. It is just, get a weapon or vehicle, go out and kill as much as you can and try to take a base. That's ALL there is to the game. And yes, there are like 4 different types of bases, they're all the same...gets a bit boring. The 24h wait on the new skill is also complete crap, and starting out, it takes a LONG time getting to places unless you get a vehicle certification straght off the bat.

And as for it not being released yet...it has been. Beta ended 4 days ago...and yes, there were still many bugs in it.

IMO, wise to avoid it, atleast for now. Anyhow, I wouldn't buy a P2P game in the first place.

BF1942 is great from what I've heard, don't actually have it myself. Maybe I should go and pick it up.

True... given that the game is buggy and a beta, you cannot argue against the fact that it did get very, very boring after 10 to 20 days of hard playing (maybe even less). With this I suggest that you go out, divert your eyes from anything remotely like Planetside and buy Battle Field 1942.
