    thinkin about upgrading

I think its 'bout time to upgrade my video card after seeing videos of Doom III and Half Life 2.
What would you guys recommend me buying? I'd like to have a card that will let me play the latest games and will last a good 2 years atleast (like my current GeForce 3). I usually play games in 1024*768 x32 but would like to have silky frame rates with all graphics set to max and perhaps anistropic filtering and some anti-aliasing enabled. If possible, I'd like to stick with nVidia, but they seem to be in a certain funk right now...is the GeForce FX 5900 promising?
Given my system specs, would something like the Radeon 9800 or FX 5900 benefit me that much, or would I have a big bottleneck? Maybe by Christmas I'll upgrade my processor and RAM; but for right now, would buying a top of the line video card be a smart choice?

The 5900u is very promising IMO. I think that the R400 from ATI will be even more so though.

Edit-I wouldn't worry about bottlenecking if you plan on upgrading it anyway. It will be bottlenecked, but the new card will still be a VERY nice upgrade.

ok, how 'bout if i DON'T plan to upgrade the system in the near future: is it still a very beneficial upgrade?
And if I do upgrade, what do you guys think I should upgrade to? I'm thinking 1 GB of the same RAM and something like a AMD 3000+ XP--you guys think that'll last me for a long time?
    Thanks

I think you should upgrade when the games come out...unless of course you need an upgrade for some other reason at the moment.

He said he wants max details with AA and AF. A G3 will simply nto make the cut!

I think so. Plus, when you got to upgrade everything else, you will get the added of benefit of not bottlenecking the card as much.
