Help me... athlon vs p4 in "shuttle" box
Im trying to build a media center box built on an ITX ("shuttle" box) platform (gonna be hooked up to a 36" WEGA). The biggest problem im having right now is deciding between intel or amd... all its gonna be doing is playing dvds, divx, music, and running a couple of emulators.. so nothing powerful is needed... im going with a 9000 AIW and a ~2ghz ish cpu (cheap is the word)... the xp1700 is only 40 some bucks right now and an equivalent 2-2.4ghz p4 costs at least 3 times as much.. but im woried about heat issues (small case with no ventilation) and power issues (150-200watt max) with the athlon. and i shudder at using a 128k 1.8-2ghz celeron (only about $80).. any leads?

well consider this. I have read ppl hitting 2.0-2.1GHZ on stock voltage using the shuttle. No heat issuses. Just got with AMD and save money

Grab a 2400XP and overclock it a little.....it'll work good...

You should be OK with a 1700 or 1800 XP, just use a decent HS/fan. You could always undervolt and keep it even cooler. Intel chipsets are more reliable but you can't beat AMD prices.
You really don't need a fast CPU for that project. Save the money for big hard drives. I am really thinking about doing this myself so let us know what hardware you decided on.

AMD...and then undervolt it to 1.4Vcore. It'll work great. I have my AXP 2100+ running at 1.8Ghz on 1.4Vcore. 1.47Ghz @ 1.4Vcore should be a piece of cake. It'll make next to no heat at that setting

undervolting sounds interesting.... but ill have to see which ITX mobos support vcore adjustment..
