can't ping to www sites, but I can open them with a browser

if i try to ping hotmail, SF, yahoo, google, (known sites) i get a request timed out, but if i open a browser IE, netscape, opera i can access the sites. Isn't it the other way where you can ping sites but can't open them

    i'm just curious

You can block outgoing ping requests through a router

Also those sites might block ping requests.

Out of that list I cannot ping: SF & Hotmail

I can ping: Yahoo & Google

Did you try ping www.yahoo.com or www.google.com???

They are probably just blocking the return packet.. Most sites do.

The block is at the far end. Sites now days block ICMP messages because of the potential abuse - ping of death, etc.
