a friend wants to give his old cdrom to his uncles, but on the box of the cdrom says minimum of a 133Mhz cpu. and the machine it will be used is a pentium 1 75Mhz with 32 ram

there schould not be an issue with using it. most of the computer world is back word compattible. the system requirements are probly for the software that came with the cd rom.

It depends, I think. I am a home music studio enthusiast, and I've found that in many cases, software manufacturers are way off on their minimum requirements; for example, Acid Pro4 has a minimum requirement of 300Mhz I believe, but It was choking on the AMD 700Mhz I had. It works fine with the 1800+ though.

On the flipside, a CD labeler app I have works fine on my computer at work, which is only a 350Mhz Celeron, I believe. The box, however, recommends a 500Mhz.

It really depends upon the app, I guess.

you can try it in the computer and see if it works, but I still think the drive really does need the 133Mghz processor to run.

parts sometimes don't marry well. it may not even be recognised.

you may find the CD player may not even work properly in that older machine, limitation of the motherboard, ect. it may not even be recognised.

it doesn't hurt to try.

So long as the system BIOS recognizes ATAPI devices, it should work. If I remember correctly, ATAPI-compliant device recognition became commonplace around the same time as the P54C Pentium (75+ MHz), but I could be off.

To avoid people with old 286/386/486 computers and pre-ATAPI Pentium systems from buying the drives, maybe the manufacturer listed the specs as "Pentium 133 and up". If they were to print "requires ATAPI-compatible system BIOS", hardly any consumers would know what they're talking about.

It will probably work.But i believe that your system won't take full advantage of the cdrom as the 133mhz pentum and up system would
