I don't really like either method. I never tried the freeze and crack method, but it sounds like trouble waiting to happen. I have hear success stories by that method so I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think it's too risky.
I tried the heat and twist method and the bad thing about that is the thermal pad's physical change from the thermal variation. I guess it would be more effective if you waited for the thermal pad to harden back up before attempting to remove it. I didn't wait and the material was very, very sticky. After about 1 hour of rubbing with 70% isopropyl alcohol, I still couldn't get it 100% off.
That problem may be either solved with using a more concentrated isopropyl alcohol, or using a thin razor blade to scrape the remaining thin layer of thermal tape off. I don't recommend the blade though. I think that if you just wait for the thermal tape to harden back up then removing it will become a lot less painless.

I have heard some good results with sliding a credit card under the core and work your way around it and it will pop off
But there is a lot of cleaning after to do.

try 90% Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning. It WILL work much better.
I like the Credit card method the best. Just work it slow and easy.

USE GOOF-OFF!!! That stuff is amazing. Just follow that with some rubbing alcohol and you'll be good to go.
As for removing the heatsink, I agree with Jago about the risks. Though my method was no better. I just got a screwdriver and used one of the dillyboppers(no, not the capacitators!) on the card as a fulcrum. I was careful not to apply too much pressure and I did it in several areas. It came off with a little effort, but off nonetheless.

*lol*
Last thing anyone needs is to pry off the core to find it sitting on the back of the heatsink instead of on the card
I remember someone doing that with there ramsink.... I forget who.

Tiger Shark
ok ive decided to use a credit card. now since im using a credit card (softer and less harsh than a metal screwdriver) Should i freeze the card first or heat it up. My first guess is to heat it via heavy Eod play then pry it off.

LOL! Just went to a movie with a girl from Beaverton! There are a couple of other people in Oregon on these forums to.
Colossus, Jago-I think you are right about Pyro too.
Personally, I thought the credit card trick didn't do a darn bit of good.
*edit-Just noticed the second option on the poll! I think it takes about 20mins to work...not all night!
