How's this for my 1st OC?

After doing a fair amount of reading here, I started trying to OC my puter. Here's what I did so far:

Test #1: FSB set to 220 (x14=3.08Mhz), DRAM freq. to 266. Vcore was set to auto (~1.58). I ran 3dm2001se and made it through with a score of 16,320. My very 1st score w/o any OCing was ~16,100. CPU temp after this according to asus probe was 44C.

Test #2 FSB set to 230 (x14=3.220Mhz), DRAM still at 266. Vcore was set to auto (~1.58). 3dmark crashed about 1/3 of the way through.

Test #3 same as #2 except I upped the Vcore to 1.60 and left the 0.1v option disabled. I assume this means the highest I can set my Vcore is 1.7??? 3dmark crashed again. The temp immediately after was 50C.

So how does this approach look so far? What else should I be doing to OC? It looks like something between 3.08 and 3.220 is what I'm likely to get out of this 2.8c chip, but I know there are other variables to change. Also, I can't seem to find out how to change the mem timings in my BIOS. What would be recommended for the hyperX3200 RAM? Thanks a lot. Also, I know 3dmark isn't the best way to check for stability, but I figured it was adequate for now.

Looks like your cpu doesnt clock like a champ, but how bad it scales is sad. mine scales just as bad so I leave her at 2GHz. 2.8GHz stock is a good deal though.

    Cool cooling

stock?? or an aftermarket cooler of superior quality???

it can make all the difference with the ultimate clockage you attain.

you are doing good, those P$'s scale fairly well, don't they???

betcha there is a lot more.

hint, you will get a better clock with the ram ratios reduced and the good cooling added to the mix, really helps with the higher fsb clockage.

At 230 fsb your memory is trying to run at 460 MHz. Try dropping to your memory divider to 5:4. This will give you more headroom to raise the fsb as well. Look at Colossus' comments in this thread for more.

Also, once you start overclocking the temperatures jump like mad so really look at what you are doing for cooling. At stock my 2100+ was ~30C but now I am around 43C idle.

Try dropping to your memory divider to 5:4.
I'm still confused on this 3/2, 5/4 memory thing. So in order to get 5/4 I have to set my DRAM freq. to 320, not 266, right? Also, how did you calculate the 460mhz #? Is it just the fsb of 230 multiplied by 2?
I should also mention that I have a thermal pad on my CPU that came with the chip, so I'm wondering how effective that is going to be in keeping the cpu cool. I've been leaving the case open to maximize cooling at this point.

The stock cooler will limit your overclock...

But yes you are right DDR is Double Data Rate, so if your FSB is 230 and your multi is 1:1 (DDR400) then the DDR speed is 230x2...

Now if you want to go higher, I would recommend using DDR333 before going to DDR266

    DDR33 is 5:4 and DDR266 is 3:2

Well been messing more with my OC and here's an update:
I got my best benchmark (17,111) with the following settings:
    Bus 200 (x14=stock 2.8ghz)
    DRAM freq 400
    Vcore auto
    Temp after benchmark = 40C

After this I tried bumping the Bus up to 205 and 210 without any luck. Got the blue screen of death. Maybe I should increase the Vcore?

The only other settings that gave me comparable results (17,100) was this:
    Bus 210
    DRAM 320
    Core Auto
    Temp 41C
Actually when I tried these settings again with the Bus at 215, my score dropped to 16,589.

    Any more thoughts? Thanks
