Fighting the pc noise

I did another research last night and was totally blew away by how many silent coolers out there but no one knows about it. ArctiCooler from Agilent, Molex Radial Fin, LAC Augmented Fan Heat Sink,or Thermaltake Orb among a few. The review I found so far all point to the better performance with silence of these coolers.

On my quest to silent pc, I am so disburbed by the fact that most of cpu cooler in the market are directing users to noisier configuration by exaggerating the effect. Global Win, Alpha are the culprit and can provide far better performance than those technologically advanced solution at the same price.

I have installed Molex cooler and I love it. I am in search of silent power supply, probably from Enermax or Q technology, but not PC Power & Cooling's. Getting a silent pc will make music sweeter, clearer and, since I am running Windows 2000, keep my computer 24/7. I do not want to play games on an aircraft engine.

Goto PriceWatch.com and search for the Enermax power suplies.

Goto 2cooltek.com to get cpu coolers, drive and case coolers, and plain old case fans, including the quiet Sunon fans.

I recently switched to a water-cooled setup. If you have the courage to put water in your computer, this is definitly the way to go. The only noise I hear now is the water pump (low pitch hum) and one 120mm (5") low speed fan. This kinda thing costs more up front, but you can mount it on any future CPUs that you may buy. It's the most flexible, most silent way to go.

Note: If you put your computer on Standby often, and you have the right headers on your motherboard, you should get 3-pin fans.

CORRECTION

In the PS where it says "your own system for only $80 US", I mean water-cooling system, not entire computer system. A computer that only costs $80 has got to suck ***.

Top noise making devices are:

1.Harddrive
2.Fans
3.cd-rom

If you go here and learn to Mod your fans then your halfway done. http://virtualhideout.net

The biggest noise maker is the 7200rpm harddrives. If you have a New Maxtor Drive. You can use the software at http://Maxtor.com
to trade off speed for sound noise.

My older 20gig Maxtor was built right before this feature from Maxtor.
But I still found away to kill the high pitch of death.

Get some meaty leather from the store. Cut many layers to fit the top and bottom. Now rap tight with ducktap. I didn't even take the time to make holes for mounting it. I just made it so fat it had no place to go but sit in the case like a pillow.

And it Works 100%!!! The system is overclocked by about 10% and have had no problems with over-heating.

At first I thought this would be extreme, but now that I see how much you nutters are willing to spend on making your computer quiet, I thought it would be worth a mention. When I take the cover off the majority of my computers, especially those with 2 HDDs, its the HDDs themselves which out-noise the fans. Have a peek at www.tomshardware.com if you're really serious. He does noise level tests on the hard disks he reviews.. heat tests too.. which could effect the amount of fans you require or how many rpms they'll spin at if they have a heat sensor of sorts.

www.inflowdirect.com has Sunon fans. Personally I love the sound my computer makes. 6 Case Fans and an FOP-38, gotta love it. Gives me an excuse to start a war with the neighbors rockin mp3's through the house. Woohoo!

I have soldered a 50 ohm resistor in series with the fans in my powersupply & cpu. This makes the fans run slower & therefore quieter. This modification will not be suitable for systems that run hot. If your heat sink only feels slightly warm you might try it, but don't modify your powersupply unless you're qualified to do it. You could kill yourself!

As far as Enermax is concerned, the home.swipnet.se has the verdict as the quiet psu, while mostly ballyhooed PC Power & Cooling silent psu has not yet reached "quiet" status yet, not to mention being silent.
Most stock psu comes with the purchase of pc case, so naturally no hardware site pays attention to how psu performs. Enermax, Q Technology all produce silent psu's, but no hardware site ever tested them, not even mention them.

Any one knowing of any more reviews?

I'm really interested in buying one of those silent PSU, however I'm not sure which one to get, 250W or 300W.

The one I'm having now, is 250W (working just fine). The components that I have, that's important when discussing this topic, is:

Celeron 466 (Might soon be PIII 700)
Two HDD:s
Hercules Geforce 2 Ultra

Which one should I go with, 250W or 300W. Please be honest, and don't just recommend the "best" (300W), since I can save some money on going with the 250. However, if you do think that there are reasons why I should go with the 300W, I'll get that one.
