having trouble accesing file on a network to send email with Outlook Express

I don't personally use OE, so i'm unfamiliar with it.

My parents on the other hand use it all the time. My problem, when a 'client' pc wants to send an attachment that is located on the 'server' (actually a P2P network). If you double click on the shortcut that leads to the folder where the files are located, OE doesn't open the folder, instead it wants to send the shortcut. I could Map the drive, but is there a way to send the files with the use of shortcuts?

Do you have Outlook 2k or Outlook 2k3 available? I tried making an attachment in Outlook 2003 (not Outlook Express) by pointing to a shortcut and it attached the underlying file.
