    best DVD +R/RW, -R/RW drive???

    hi all. easy question. what's the best (internal) DVD +R/RW -R/RW drive currently on the market?

    I would probably go with a DVD+RW drive. Saying that they all have pretty much the same speed. 2.4x for DVD+RW and the better ones have 4x for DVD+R. I know the NEC ND-1300A is one of these faster ones. It also does DVD-RW and DVD-R.

    i don't know about the plextor but i ended up ordering the sony DVD +R+RW, -R-RW combo drive.

    yeah, $300 was alot for that burner, but since i'm in the process of buying a complete new system (new monitor as well!) i figured i'd just add that into the overall price. i bought an alienware and they only had a plextor DVD+R/+RW. i've done a bit of research and i just decided i wanted to be able to handle all the formats b/c i'd be doing a mix of things with this drive. the sony got high marks from several web reviews so i just said why not? i'll let you guys know how it performs once my freaking computer gets here!

    i'm new to this dvd thing. does format matter all that much if you're not sharing your data?

    i've got about 80GB of mp3's that i need to back up and it'd be a lot easier to do that on a dvd, i think.

    That's a lot of music! What bit rate? And how many hours is that? I would guess it's a month of nonstop music.

    heh..it's actually my cd collection. i'm 38 and have been buying them since 1984. According to my db, there are roughly 11000 songs all sampled at 128 and it took me several months to rip them all and i don't want to go through that again.

    since every stereo I own, plays mp3's, it's easier for me to burn 110 or so, on to a disc for road trips.

    and if you're wondering how many cd's that is, i'm right around 1000 cd's...give or take.

    and if you played it nonstop, it should play around 50 or 51 days if my calculations are correct.

    but i really want to back these up and using 130 cd's doesn't sound appealing.

    DVD-R is much more widely used and is more compatible with other devices than DVD+R. You can get a Pioneer 4X DVD-RW from newegg.com for about $170.

    Hmm, really, if you have relatively new DVD player(s), then this +/- dilemma is, in fact, a non-issue. Most new DVD players made after 2000 supports all four formats (DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW).

    Also, DVD-R is supported by the "DVDForum" which is a much larger 'coalition' of vendors than the "DVD+RW Alliance."

    Of course, there are now drives that support both +/- but are about $100 more.

    Yes... I agree.... I would choose DVD-R over +R... I did actually . I got one of the cendyne 4x buners... basically a repackaged Pioneer A05 . Works awesome... no problems with compatiblity on players at all. However... my Xbox had some issues playing back a +R disc though... however, -R's run great on my Xbox and DVD drives .
