My first Athlon XP
I just picked up an Epox 83GA+ with a Barton 2500 and 1gb of corsair XMS. I'm using the stock cooler at stock speeds and I'm curious about the temps. I've been running Prime95 for an hour and the temps are at 54C. With a p4, its not a big deal, but can an athlon xp handle those temps? The case is one without particularly good cooling but I'm not interested in overclocking it (atleast not much!)
Anyway, if I did want to overclock it, the stepping info is AXDA2500DKVD AQUCA0323TPMW. Is that one of the "good" batches?

Yes those temps are ok. Most of the forum posters like it to be below 50C but running Prime95 pushes it to the max so 54 isn't bad. Try to get some better cooling in the case. Your temps wil drop. I have an Antec 1000 case, 5 fans, Vantec Heat sink with ArticSilver3 thermalpaste. My 2500 Barton overclocked to 2230Mhz (11x202) is 35C idle, 41C full. Case cooling IS important.

Just like Gkline said, case coolig is HUGE. Those temps arent that bad. Think of the variables though...
You have a stock cooler and your case cooling isnt't that great, also you ambient temps could be high. So that leaves you alot of room to improve, which is good
Also I believe your stepping is pretty good, she should be good for 2.1-2.3ghz

Thanks.. that's good to hear. Right now its an old enlight case with a Fortron PSU sucking air INTO the case. Kinda wierd. To compensate for that, I have an 80mm fan blowing air out of the only fan mount, the front. I don't think its succeeding. I might make it suck air in. There are vents in the side panels and the rear, but no place to really mount a fan. Plus, ambient is in the high 80'sF right now so I can't complain. I might overclock it more, so I am debating pulling out the old dremel tool....
