    9800 Pro...5900FX...Win98...

A friend of mine wants to upgrade his video card without upgrading his OS (he likes his older games) and he's trying to decide between the 9800 Pro and 5900 FX.

Now I know there are a zillion threads about this, but there is a twist in this one...
He runs windows 98 and from the email he sent me it seems he was told that the 9800 Pro doesn't ship with 98 drivers so he was told
    to use Me drivers instead.

So anyone here run a 9800 pro on windows 98?
Any issues with that OS for either card?

    Need some input here

AFAIK the R9800 does support Win 9x/ME. And if you ask me it's a better deal then the FX5900U.

So there aren't any issues then with an AIW 9800 Pro using windows Me drivers under Windows 98?
(if it was XP i'd recommend it myself, saves him from having to get a seperate AIW solution on PCI)

Get a new OS, microsoft stopped certifying new drivers for 98 at the end of last year. Therefore, every driver you download will be a year old and won't get any updates evar.

The general rule of thumb is that any Windows9x driver can work on any Windows9x/ME OS. There are exceptions, and there may be some with the All-in-Wonder 9800 Pro. No guarantees.

He should consider upgrading to a newer operating system, but if he absolutely can't, there is a good chance it will work.

There is no reason he can't play his games in WindowsXP or 2k they both allow you to use compatibility mode which will allow any win95 level game and up to work.
Also Nvidia still fully supports windows98 and 95

Yeah, it's supposed to work, but I found that THPS2 doesn't work in XP along with Rise of the Triad (it works, but it's unbearably slow).

Microsoft changed their video card driver certification policy last year and they don't certify drivers for Win98 anymore. This doesn't mean that ATI and Nvidia has to drop support for that OS. They still fully support Win98. Before, when you download vid card drivers for Win98, it would say Win98 and ME on the download site. Since Microsoft doesn't certify 98 drivers anymore, ATI had to get rid of the 98 label. It's still the same drivers and it still supports both 98 and ME.

not true Nvidia still uses 95 and 98 names in its files and on their site.
Ati said awhile ago starting with their 9700pro they were droping all 98se support. While ME drivers may work in 98se your asking for problems.
