IE has performed an illegal operation and will shut donw
this is on my friends pc, it is win 98 abd that is all i know, i would like to know if i can fix or should i just reformat the hdd? i have to go there in 20 mins

Illegal Operation Error = 32-bit application in the RAM is not working correctly.
Try running scandisk. There should be no need to format unless this happens often. Even try running Windows Update to see if a file could fix the problem.

if the download of IE6 SP1 doesn't work, then reload WIN 98 and try the download again.
I used to get that type of error msg running IE5, but don't now that I use the more recent version, although I did reload WIN 98 several times already.

Win9x/ME is prone to crashing anyways. It could be caused by IE; but it could also be some other program completely unrelated to IE causing the problem. Back when I had Win9x, I did a system restore every 6-12 months...but then again, I installed lots of programs as well.

Yeah, that'll do it. The more you install, the more the Registry gets screwed....
I haven't had to reinstall more than once a year, but I do it to only to clean up 98.
