    What is the best DVD burner out now?

    How good are the burners nowadays? If I buy one now, am I just going to be totally bumming in a short while?

    There are some 8X drives coming out soon. Although you will probably be just fine with any of the current 4x drives. I burn most of my data at 1-2x because the media I have will not go higher. Most of the time sorting through the data I want to burn takes longer than the actual burn. Its harder to find 4GB of data you want to keep than it is to find 700MB I'm not sure about the current drives but in December when I got the DRU it burned regular cds twice as fast as the other drives out (24x).

    The NEC ND-1300A and it's many OEM spinoffs is certainly the most popular DVD burner out there now. It does not share the numerous media compatibility issues reported by Sony owners and out paces everything else by at least a 3 to 1 margin in sales.
    Although Plextor has recently released the fastest (8X) drive, the have been no reviews on this unit as yet.

    Your best bet is to get a dual-format drive that supports both DVD-R/W AND DVD+R/W.

    The best/most popular drives are:

    NEC ND-1300A (4X DVD-R/2X DVD-RW/4X DVD+R/2.4X DVD+RW)

    Sony DRU500A (4X DVD-R/2X DVD-RW/4X DVD+R/2.4X DVD+RW)

    Sony DRU510A (4X DVD-R/2X DVD-RW/4X DVD+R/4X DVD+RW)

    Pioneer DVR-A06 (4X DVD-R/2X DVD-RW/4X DVD+R/2.4X DVD+RW)

    Or you can wait till September and get:

    Plextor PX-708A (4X DVD-R/2X DVD-RW/8X DVD+R/4X DVD+RW)

    Thanks for the great input. Since I know nothing about DVD burning, how long does it take to burn the full DVD on a 4x burn?

    If its not too long I might be able to just get a 4x and skip the 8x. At some point the time savings are not a big deal.

    At 4X, it takes approximately 15min to burn a full DVD.

    That's not too bad considering it is 4.7GB or in that range. It could be quicker, but still, not too shabby. Not like going from a 4x CD to a 16x cd burner.

    I'll wait until end of this year, to see how the standards pan out. Maybe pick up a cheap 8x next year, when 8x media is cheaper. (****! I just figured I'm mostly burning Cds at 8x-12x these days anyway!)

    I think the first drives had hardware problems. The unit I had in December had some compatibility issues. It died completely on me sometime around February. The RMA unit has been much better. Using the same cheapo Ritek media I can burn 2x now instead of 1x. It may have just been heat related. The thing sat in the Shipyard for nearly a month during the lockout in California. I can not blame Sony for that.

    I think the standards have already been panned out. By the look of it, both the + and - formats are here to stay. Both have a lot of support and I sincerely doubt either format is going to fall out of favour anytime soon.
