Who enters their OS with autologing and/or Administrator/Root?

Don't know the MS server OSs nor unix, linux, mac OSs if they support auto-login.

How do you log in to your machine?
with the Administrator/Root account (not a user with administrator/root priviligies). And the other options above

I log in with a nice ctrl+alt+spr and tye user and password that has admin priviligies

You need to let us pick more than one. Most of my servers are headless and auto logon at boot up. The domain clients require a password and the systems the kids and wife use require no logon.

    Log on manually.

When most of my servers are powered on, they simply sit at the logon screen. If the server apps are set to run as services, nobody needs to log on to the server console and the app will run in the background. Nearly all server apps are designed to be administered from a computer other than the server itself, so I rarely have to use the servers' keyboard console.

I always enter my password and login name. It's just how my OSes were set up I guess.

It depends on the app. Most server apps are designed to run as services. Some home apps run as services, too, like antivirus programs. To see what's running as a service, just look in Computer Management. Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Go to Services in the left column (under Services and Applications) and all your services will be listed on the right.

If there are applications that you want to run as services, there are tools in the Windows resource kit that allow you to configure that.

I have several, I run an Active Directory Domain here at home. The systems are small iron, just Workstation parts, mostly Intel boards and chips. But then I don't ask much from them. Four users here at home, a couple that VPN in, two that only use FTP, and two dial in's. Never seen more than four logged in at a time.

As for running apps as services, some will and some won't. My antivirus will not run as a service on the servers, so I autologon.

    Auto login >admin/root w/password........not a problem

If they get to the machine and have the key to the power switch, they can do what they want anyway.

It's my house, there is a lock and an alarm. I'm really not too worried about site security. My main concern is that I can run the domain from work, where I spend sooo much of my time

The Windows password is not much security these days. Even a change of the admin acount name does not really help if they have access to the machine.

Yeah, isn't there a utility out there that will display all the user accounts and passwords for a local machine?

I always login manually with an account I created, but that user has administrator rights. However, auto-login is only less secure if you don't trust someone with access to your computer.

    Yep, and it's free

My DC's are headless, so even if the got to them, the need to boot another system and then know enough to drive them from a console. I would be more worried that they would carry them out the door.
